Default Dynoed the Dodge and Found the Limits of Street Tires on Dyno Drums

At 13 psi boost got 313 hp / 309 ft lb.

Then, when I tried to really crank it up, the tires were smoking on the dyno drums and we couldnt really get the true peak reading. With boost at 24 psi the tires spun in 4th gear right when the car was starting to pull like a train, boost dropped off to 19-20 psi or so with the reduction in load. The dyno sheet ended at 393 hp / 465 ft lb. Where the tires started spinning on the dyno is pretty obvious from the attached plot.

Car is a 1991 Dodge Spirit R/T with a 2.2L 16V. All stock internals, manifolds, etc. God bless 1980's Dodge overengineering!

Plot showing stock T3 50 trim wheel / 0.42 A/R compressor housing, standard T3 turbine / 0.48 A/R turbine housing dyno run versus TO4E Super 50 trim wheel / 0.50 A/R compressor housing, T3 Stage 3 turbine / 0.63 A/R housing.

Both plots at 13 psi boost.

What a difference a turbo makes.

God that is some insane numbers for the Dodge. I never knew it had that much potential. I guess this was way better then the Max huh?

When I redyno with my slicks on the car (to avoid tire slippage) Im sure it will bump power up about another 30-50 hp. But, to be honest, where the car is now isnt really usably on street tires. When driving the car on the highway at 70 mph and flooring it in 4th results in wild tire spin, its just too much. Kinda cool, but basically useless.

Ive got $3500 into the car (plus my labor of course)....including the car. The car is in mint shape too...perfect paint and interior.

Slight improvement in power output.

I had the Max at the same time as this car as I dont drive the Spirit daily. The Spirit is just a "toy" type car I drive when I feel like it.

Larry,

When do you plan on redynoing? I am very curious as to how much power will be produced.

I always called the Supra over-engineered but it looks like I can start calling the Dodge 2.2L turbo as well. I actually have a chance to pick up a dodge with this exact motor in it. Looks like I may be doing that. What mods do you hav eon it so far? What do you think the internals are good for? Miles you have on it? Its always good to see a Domestic 4cyl that has big potential.

Not sure...maybe another month or so. Im going on vacation for a couple of weeks next Friday. Plus, I take my time with this stuff as its just a hobby....never in a rush!

I wouldnt stretch this engine to a Supra comparison (Ill never touch Supra power levels) but it sure does make some good power for such a small displacement.

Which Dodge might you be picking up? The Daytona IROC R/T or the Spirit R/T? Both use the same driveline of course.

As far as mods....all bolt on stuff. Heres a quick list:

Stock lower end
Stock head
Stock manifolds
3” side exit exhaust with Walker Ultraflow #17723 muffler
TO4 E Super 50 trim compressor in a 0.50 A/R housing with a T3 Stage 3 turbine in a 0.63 A/R housing from Rick Diogo
3 core front mount intercooler from Gary Donovan
+40 injectors
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator from Rick Diogo
3 cold start injectors on a pressure switch (only 1 used on dyno with a 12 psi turn on…wasn’t needed but I used it just to be on the safe side)
Procharger rising rate fuel pressure regulator (Adjustable from 1:1 to about 9:1. Its installed, but I didn’t need to use this on the dyno either.)
Turbo XS Type H-RFL BOV
4 puck clutch disk from Gary Donovan with stock TIII pressure plate
Grainger valve for boost control
Walbro GSL 392 external fuel pump
5 gallon Jaz fuel cell in trunk
Usual array of gauges (digital EGT, boost, fuel pressure, O2 voltage)

As far as commenting on how much the engine can take, Im really not sure. The lower end comes factory with forged Mahle pistons, forged rods, forged crank and is tought stuff. My engine has 142,000 on it! I freshened it up last winter with new rings and rod bearings, head resurface and valve job, etc, but thats it.

The absolute killer drag race setup would be this engine swapped in a lightweight L body Dodge (Charger or Omni.) Ive thought about it, but IM not that interested in having this otherwise nice car up. Im prefer all the luxuries like cold AC, power windows, etc as I have now in my heavyweight cruiser grandma mobile

and
1991-1993 Dodge Daytona R/T.

Both used the same driveline.

Talking Lucky you....

...Yeah these R/T Sprit's are sick fun, I have a freind that built one up like 5-6 years ago, it's funny that you mention that thing about the tires spinning at like 70 or so as I remember toying with him back in the day with my Mustang, I specificaly remmember looking over at him down shifting and seeing this 4door car spinning the fronts at like 70+ I was like couldn't believe my eyes to this day. Those things are pretty rare they only made like a few thousand.
Yep my boy is looking to get another one cause he sold his a few years ago, says that was the biggest mistake he made, selling that car.
Well I ain't looking forward to seeing him get one and eating up my poor rex from a roll

You sure the car was strapped down good... cause when i dynoed 382whp/386tq @ 16psi I had no problems what so ever, we just dynoed my other friends car and he dynoed 429.5whp/440tq also not a problem with tire spire.

My car will only spin the tires in 3rd gear at 18psi if i start out of boost and go into boost when it 1st hits... but if I am already at like 4500rpms and punch it no tire spinning.

But good numbers there is one by us that is making like 315whp
