Default 99 Legacy Needs More Power...

I've been doing a lot of suspension work on my 99 Outback. At this point it has basically been converted to a GT; with WRX 16" rims (on toyo RA-1's), and KYB GR2 struts with a 2" lower spring perch. I've also installed front and rear strut tower braces and a 22mm rear sway bar. Anyway, I'm interested in getting another 30+ HP out of the 2.5 for less than $1000. What do you guys recommend?

hmm seems tough but if you stick to second hand parts you could up improve your ride.

how about intake exhaust and pulley set. this is what i figure-

muffler shop made my 2.5 inch exhaust w/ flowmaster muffler installed for $250 sounds great too!

used cold air or ram air intake w/ k+n filter i'd assume the intakes for that same year legacy maybe even rs could be used and it also adds to that great exhuast sound. $200??

Light weight or underdrive pulley set. People have different preferences so It' be up to you if you wanted to underdrive your altenator or ac rather than just getting light weight versions of the ones you have. $ 200- 250

I picked these parts becuase two of the three you can do at home by yourself. it may not be 30+ but you'll be more peppy that's for sure. and w/ the extra money you could go and check out some short throw shifters and a shift knob for more driving pleasure. Not the fastest in the world but since you own a subaru that was never the intent. You did your suspension nicely it seems so use that to your advantage when having fun w/ the car.

or you could be like that Paul Walker guy and just go for the bottle... No wait make it two of them by tonite!

happy trails!

That's a really tempting offer. However, I don't think I would be able to do that install myself. Could $500 get it done by someone else? Also, would this be a reliable setup?

What we have done to our 97 Legacy GT (automatic)
Like most legacys ours was way to slow!! but otherwise a great car.
Had installed a larger dia. exhaust with a Magnaflow SS muffler. Sounded better, but didn't notice mush increase in power. Then added a Borla header, sounded even better!!! with a little bit of power increase.....what made the biggest difference of all??? My son installed the TCU out of his 95 Impreza, and boy did it make a difference!!! with the old Legacy TCU it would want to shift way too soon....not like the impreza which would stay in each gear longer...hence better use of avail. power. Now the car is a dream to drive...sounds great, and pulls much harder!!!

Son was installing a 92 Legacy turbo engine assy into his car so he coulden't use the header and TCU anymore anyway...and the TCU plugged right in!!
