Default Need help; Want to swap ej257 into gc8

**Disclaimer: This will be slightly long but I need advice/help from someone who has done this swap befor.**

Alright here goes. Im looking to purchase an USDM STi engine (ej257) to drop into my 2000 Impreza 2.5rs. The car already has a USDM wrx engine in it (2002 ej205); mated to the stock 2.5rs's transmission. Im taking a loan out to do the swap so first, i'm looking for ideas on what all of it would cost me, etc. Secondly, i'm slightly worried about the wiring. The car as it sits has a 2002 wrx harness meshed with the original wiring of the Impreza. Pretty much its a bit of a mess. I want the wiring aspect of the car to be neat, clean, and complete. I dont want to really "mesh" things together unless I have to, or if it really wouldnt compromise anything on the car. (The dilema I had with the car currently was that I purchased a 2002 accessport and wasnt even able to install it due to the wiring job, ive been wanting to do the sti swap and now the time is right and I have an excuse to )

I assumed it wouldnt be 'too' hard (the wiring), I could make everything real nice, etc, have everything in its correct spot and i'd know exactly where everything was. Theres some friends here at school who are telling me that the wiring is going to be alot harder than im anticipating. I never thought it would be easy, but they're questioning wether id be able to do it in the timeframe im trying to.

The scenerio: I goto wyotech. I will be in a Chassis Fabrication class next phase (approx 2 months, so im trying to prepare now), and I would have the opportunity to do this swap in that class. I would have a few other friends/classmates that would be able to get in on the project; so obviously id have some helping hands. I'd have the engine and everything out befor the class started, and im trying to be almost overly prepared for it. I dont want to be missing anything I need then have to order it and wait x amount of time for something when time is very limited. I have 6 weeks to do the swap, im in class for 8 hours a day, probally in the shop for 6-7 of those hours.

I really need someone on the board to lend me their knowledge of this. If a company is willing to sell me everything I need for the swap id buy it all as a package, and possibly pay a little extra to have full instructions of every thing that needs to be done.

Im also looking for transmission recommendations. Money is an issue, aswell as time. I was hoping to do the swap for 10k or less.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

-Ryan R

*CLIFFNOTES: Want to do an ej257 swap into my GC8, concerned about wiring and all that. Really need a professionals opinion or someone who has done this swap befor. Pretty much wanting to know the extent of the difficulty of the swap, and generally what the cost would be INCLUDING a transmission*

you can get the engine, harnesses, tranny, driveline, brakes, hubs, suspension, etc for under 10g's.

So yeah. If you have 10 grand to blow. You're good.

^Really? Now is this parting it together, or would a company actually be able to put together a package for me? I would LOVE to have the sti tranny I just didn't think it would be realistic to purchase that aswell as everything else i needed for the swap.

you can find entire "packages". Look around in the vendor "for sale" section.. Cruise around some of the websites.. And you can stumble upon it.

Sometimes, its only jdm stuff, but you can find the usdm STi stuff rather easily also.

Not USDM. We've paid 12k+for the last 4 STi drivetrains out here...I learned a long time ago that a 10k setup is no bargin.

Keep in mind, if your wiring is really that hacked, you'll want a new 2000 bulkhead harness too. Take your time to plan the wiring fully if you want it to look clean.

Cool, thank you for your help subbyspeed. I think im going to link this thread in the classifieds section under wanted.. just so some vendors can see my interest and intent. Hopefully some offers will be sent my way.

I would settle for the JDM STi engine if it came down to the wire but i've really got my eyes set on the 2.5. I just started searching last night, figured i'd get a head start on the preperations. Technically I have two months and 6 weeks befor I need 'EVERYTHING' in my possession. (Class is a 3 month course, 6 of those weeks are spent on theory, the other 6 in the shop)

Hmm. Well initially I didn't plan on getting the USDM tranny. Its sooo expensive. I was thinking of maybe a helical dogbox or something. Im really not too knowledgable on them though.. which is why I am looking for suggestions on trannys. I would be happy with a 5 speed of sorts..

How much do jdm 6mts run for?

the jdm 6 speeds w/ dccd are about the same as the usdm ones. Ones without dccd, slightly cheaper i'd imagine.

^Thanks. What would be a cheaper alternative? The car is going to remain stockish for awhile, maybe just a turbo back and accessport befor I really start modding. (going to pay off the loan befor i start dumping more cash into the car)

Noone else can give me any help with this? There isnt anyone on here that has done the swap that is willing to give me tips/advice?
