Thumbs down 1997 Legacy GT, Rear, Right Window stuck!

Any idea what would cause my rear right window to stop rolling up. It is stuck for both the door and drivers side control.

Thanks,
Brendan

Would need a bit more info to help you out. Does it move at all? If so, how much, where does it stop? Does it sound/feel like something is blocking it? Or does it sound/feel like it is turning itself off?

Today I managed to get the window closed, but when it sticks open, it doesn't soudn like the window is even trying to go up. It stuck when it was all the way down.

If it doesn't sound like the motor is trying to put the window back up, then the motor is probably going out. You'd need a multimetere to test if there is power going to it when the switch is pressed to move it back up.

When you put the window back up, did it feel like it was really tough to do? If the motor encounters enough resistance, it will stop trying to move the window, or is not strong enough to force the window up for safety reasons.

It's probably one of your window switches going bad...

Once the window went up, it went up without a problem. This leads me to believe it's a switch, but how come when it was stuck niether the driver's control or the control on that door made it work, wouldn't that exclude the switch?

Thanks
Brendan

Not necessarily. If the the switches are wired in series, then one would depend on the other. And if 1 goes bad, neither will work. Though you can try and test this by disconnecting 1 one of the switches. I'd suggest on the rear door itself, as I believe there are relays in the drivers hookup. After you disconnect, try the other switch.

Also, check all the connections to make sure they are good, tight, and CLEAN. Make sure no wires are being pinched.

Speedwagon is right on, the main window switch makes the circuit...That's probabaly what's wrong.

Same thing happened to me with the passenger window switch...I popped it out and moved it to one of the back doors, problem temporaraly solved

It's not the motor, it's the switch for sure. Does anyone know the cost of those suckers? I'm guessing not cheap.

Under $10 at your local junkyard.

good luck finding Subaru's in the junk yard around here...it's like non-existant...They just keep going, and going, and going. People never seem to wreck them here either!

I just had the same problem with the front pass. window on my Impreza. It ended up being the drivers side switch. I just took the switch apart as far as I could and gave it a good bath with contact cleaner.Problem solved for now. If it keeps acting up I am going to have to replace the whole drivers switch panel, for around 80 bucks

I am currently experiencing a similar problem with my '91 Legacy. I just had the emission control computer repaired (amongst other things) and when I finally got the car back from the shade tree mechanic, the right rear window would not roll down using the driver's master control, but it would roll down from the roght rear door switch. BUT - then it wouldn't roll up! I managed to get it up by jumpering the molex connector in a fashion that the motor leads were reversed, then rolled it up. So it seems that SOMETHING is causing it to be unidirectional. I will bathe the switch in contact cleaner tomorrow and see if that helps.

Thanks to all for the input.

Talking

I must admit that I was incredulous that it could be so simple a solution. I managed to disassemble the window switch (it's actually quite simple since it snaps together) in the right rear door panel. It was clearly arced, so I scraped it and generously flushed it with contact cleaner.

VOILA! problem solved.

thanks to all for the advice.
