Default Top Speed?

Anyone hit the top speed of the STi yet? I hear its electronically controlled. If you could get a new ECU, or a reflash, do you think it can keep pulling past the cut-off? I'm hoping for 180mph with a little draft action from a semi

You are supposed to ask us sarcastically if we have a problem with sneaking up on a semi at 180 mph.

well, no doubt the STi could handle passing a semi doing 180 right

I was just wondering if anyone thought that it could see speeds that high if the speed governer was off. Cause that would make the car look all the more appealing to me.

STi will NEVER do 180.. ITs c.o.d is like .32 and the HUGE scoop doesnt help to slice the air..
if u get around 600-700 Hp, u should be able to get up there, but without those Hp, STi is not going 180..

You've got a better chance of seeing god than seeing 180 MPH in an STi. Although you may see god shortly after you try to go 180.

So, all you'd have to do is find a Semi going 160mph that you can draft and slingshot past to hit 180Mph.

good luck with that one, personally.. I prefer more realistic goals. So, I'm just going to stand here and flap my arms till I take off..

I thought the speed was capped at 150 or 155? 180 isn't too far from that. Unless it struggles to do even 150, whci could be true.
I guess thats why I'm asking, lol

OK then, does it even hit 150? I mean Dodge's little POS Neon SRT-4 hits 150. I would assume the STi could best that.

top speed is 145 I think according to Subaru, I am sure with a little help it can be pushed over 150..
Remember, the formula is EXPONENTIAL, meaning by doubling HP u r not doubling top speed, rather, increasing it SLIGHTLY...
If u really bored, u can calculate the the speed in 6th at certain RPMS and figure out max speed @ 8000-9000 RPMs...
Be ready to use that water sprayer a lot also..

first it's electronically limited not "drag" or "gear" limited so one would guess gettting the car from 147 (the cut-off) to 150 "might" be possible just by removing the cut-off. 160 would be nice maybe 165 .....whatever

Well this is what I am saying. Im not complaining that it only goes 150-ish, I was just wondering if it would pull even more with the limiter off. I bet with a EBC, and new ECU (if one is available) I'm sure you could best 150. But, I'll wait and see how the STi behaves to mods first. Does anyone know how stable the engine is under load in the STi in stock form? Any room for a couple more pounds of boost?

It pulls pretty well up to 145 or so, and I don't think it would have a problem getting into the low 160s without the limiter. The STi has a better cd than the Evo (yes, it does) and more power, so getting a few mph more than it shouldn't be a problem. Getting to 180 requires a lot more power, though.

Limiter is said to be at 147 mph and I've seen report of someone hitting fuel cut at 155 mph. Given potential speedo error, that 155 on the speedo might have been the 147 limiter.

ok then, thats what I thought. I was about to say, geez, my Celica can hit 140 -145mph. I bet with a few mods, you could see it creep to 170.

I too am interested in the true top speed of the Sti without the limiter. However, will I see the top speed on my own Sti? Doubtful and only on a track.

To get up to 150mph+, you need 2 things.
A car with "many" hundreds of horsepower, and lots of room/miles to get going that fast.

Also there is a huge difference between a car that can go 150mph and a car that can go 170-180. On paper it looks like just 20-30 mph, however in the real world, there are many factors that limit a car to these high speeds. (aerodynamics, hp, tires, suspension etc..)

If I lived in Germany, where I would drive on the "unlimited" part of the autobahn, then I would be interested in cars that go 150 mph+. Until then I'll stick to the fun handling and awesome acceleration of the Sti. (that is, once I get mine; maybe this week)

Truly,

Davis

just look at all of the cars with 180+ mph top speeds. they all have great aerodynamics.

After ~150, minor drag differences become huge.

Here's an interesting article on top speeds. I'm not enough of a math geek to figure it out, but my guess is aside from the speed limiter, our car's top speed is gear limited.

not sure what you mean by gear limited, but I would think it's drag limited to a lower speed than it's gearing limits it to. The gearing is good for ~175.5 at 7000 rpm, with no drag and no wheel slip. The peak power deal is probably moot, since you can hit ~138 at redline in 5th. This takes you back to 5500 rpm in 6th, which is still in the meat of the hp peak.

Well, with a cd of 0.33 (IIRC) the STi isn't too bad, even with the scoop and wing. Here is a good link to learn about estimating top speed vs horspower based on the cd and frontal area.

yeah, but that chart is wheel horsepower. I'm not sure what A is for our car also.

The 550 maranello and 360 spider have Cd of .33 also, but probably a smaller frontal area. the 360 has 400hp, and a top speed of 180? (290km/h)

The 550 has 485 hp, and a top speed of over 300km/hr.

the 911 is around .30, with 320hp. Top speed around 174, if I remember correctly. the 415 hp 911 Turbo only gets to 189.

hey, where are you all going to run 150 mph? It people like this that get themselves or others killed. I can't count the number of wrecks I've been to that involved someone in a sports car that ended up killing themselves trying to be petter solburg. Lets all be responsible and who cares what the top speed is because no one here should be able to reach it unless they go to a track which I highly doubt most goto a track in which they could reach 150! Stay safe and drive responsibly!
