Default Whistling noise on deceleration from shifter

I noticed when I had my CD player off and AC off (it was kind of cool last night) that when I'm not accelerating, my shifter makes this sort of wailing soft whistle noise. I heard it before but it does it all the time now. It does it when I'm in neutral and moving, doesn't do it when stopped at all in any gear with the clutch in.

I can make it go away if I tug down lightly on the shifter. Like you know how you can move the shifter a tiny bit while its in gear? If I hold it down the tiny bit it doesn't make the noise. Any idea what it could be?

I'm pretty sure its no worry..like if the gears were shredding or something (I know so much ) I don't think I'd hear it from the shifter, would I?

I also worry because sometimes I screw up shifting, like I only put it half into gear (I do with this 2nd, I have no idea why I do it) and it makes a nasty noise and pops out of gear when I let the clutch out. Could this be doing serious damage to the tranny? I do it maybe once a week, sometimes I don't do it for a week or more. I guess I just don't concentrate much when I'm shifting because its ingrained by now.

Last time i brought my car in for service it came back with a similar noise. If i put my hand on top of the shifter it stops...

Fairly annoying... but no doubt that its harmless.
