Unhappy

Unfortunately, it's a common failure on the SVX. You've probably got a bad wheel bearing.

Agreed, sounds like a bad bearing. If the sound gets louder at higher speeds, then it is most likely the rear wheel bearings. Are you sure they checked out okay? I had an annoying sound on certain kinds of pavement that was worst at around 30-35 mph and went away at higher speeds- both the mechanic and I thought it was the wheel bearings, but it turned out to be the tires.

If it is coming from the front of the car it may be your transmission.

If it is coming from the rear of the car, it is most certainly your bearings.

I had a noise on my Legacy GT that made me think the rear diff was bad. Just for grins I rotated the tires (back to front, front to back), and bingo, the noise moved to the front. New tires fixed the problem.

Another way to troubleshoot would be to feel your wheels after you've been driving(especially highway). The hottest wheel could be your cuprit. Brake dragging, wheel bearing, somthing along those lines. I had the parking brake on the drivers side hang up on my SVX (which is a drum type setup within the disc brake), and that's how I figured it out.

Good luck-
Rich

(sorry for the short reply earlier- it was early)

If you are waiting for us to attack you for calling the SVX a money pit... keep waiting.
I think we all agree that it is a money pit for sure. The good part is that we know exactly what corners of the pit (bearings/transmission) to throw our money in to.

$$/(s)mile, you will be hard pressed to find a better deal.

If your transmission is "kicking" when you let off the gas, have your SVX mechanic take a look at the band-brake on your transmission. Adjusting the band brake effects how the car shifts up under acceleration, shifts down under deceleraion. I just found out how to adjust it over in the powertrain forum, I am having similar problems to yours-- but I have about 90,000 miles on my current transmission.

Not 90K on the car, that's 90K on just the transmission alone
