Default interesting news from Prodrive about the Sti

Here is the message I received from Prodrive concerning Sti "stuff".

Davis: Hi,
>
> Could you please elaborate on the Stage 1 ECU upgrade kit for the US
> Sti? (25+hp?) When will this be available? Is Subaru of America with
> it; can we keep warranty? How much $ for the Stage 1 kit? Stage 2 kit?
> Stage 3 (375-390hp?!) Are these figures correct?
>
> Thanks,
>
> Davis K. Powers

Prodrive:

"Mr. Powers,

Thank you for you inquiry.

The stage 1-3 that you are speaking of, are only offered for the WRX. Performance packs for the STi are still under development in England and will take some time. I do not, however know when they will be available and as to what exactly will be offered. I can send info on the stages that work with the WRX. The horsepower has been measured at the wheel, which is why you will see WHP. A stock WRX is at about 160 whp. With the stage 1 kit, you get an increase of 12.5% in hp, which would bump it up to 180 whp. The stage 2 kit increases it to 25%, making it 200 whp. And finally with the stage 3 kit, the increase is 42.5%, making it about 228 whp. Again, parts for the STi are still under development and I'm not sure what will be available and when.

As far as warranty is concerned, I don't believe that Subaru will warranty it, but that is something that you would need to ask at the dealership. I will also send you a price sheet that has a list of our products so that you may have that on hand for future reference.

If you have any further questions, you can reach me at this email address or via phone at: (949) 757-1799.

Thank you and have a great day!"

Name has been withheld to protect the innocent

Sorry if this is dead information or not as exciting as we thought it should be, but at least they "prodrive" is working on something. Also, IMHO, this is not to say that Prodrive is the very best and that we shouldn't consider other smaller tuners who already seem to be and nearly completing some fun upgrades. Just some information, that's all....

Good point! They (Prodrive UK) will just use the 2.0L turbo engine ECU mapping and transfer it to the 2.5L US version. There's no difference right? Just kidding of course...

WE'll see what happens. Personally I'm more curious as to what Turbo XS and the Vish come out with

The guy is obviously talking about the USDM STi because they already sell a PPP for the UK STi.

Interesting you have 3 WRX options, there is just one in the UK from prodrive.

The PPP costs an extra $3265 for the UK STi and $2612 for the WRX.

Yikes!

John,

Are there alot of well know tuners who specialise in Subaru's in the UK? Is Prodrive the main "God" for tuners in the UK? What has been your experience if any with Prodrive corp?

Cheers,

Davis

Prodrive built the the Impreza P1, still the best Impreza ever made.

They also build the WRC cars, not that that counts for anything.

Oh Yes!

I know Prodrive is the big race-prep business for the big dogs but was wondering what their tuning reputation was like in UK.

Kinda like SVT Cobras and parts are big deal for Mustangs but there are better perfromance parts than the SVT stuff.

prodrive does good work and in england you retain the warrenty, so maybe it's worth the price. in the us, no warrenty so who knows if it's worth the $$?

The WRC car has nothing to do with the road car programme.

The P1 is not the best Impreza ever made, far from it! The P1 was based on the STi5 TypeR, they then removed the TypeR transmition system, driveshafts, hubs, rear brakes etc etc and installed a normal STi gearbox and ABS as installed on the UK turbo. They even removed the Intercooler spray system as teh bottle for that is fitted where the ABS module is installed. They replaced the top half of the STi5 rear wing with a wing that had a strip of carbon fibre on it. All the early P1's were shipped with normal STi5 rear wings and had to be recalled once prodrive got round to making the top section. Prodrive changed the suspension spring and damper rates making it softer. Dont believe the hype!

The ultimate GC8 Impreza probably what i own, or you could argue it was the 22B, either will walk all over a P1 with ease.

The main reason people buy the PPP in the UK is because it allows you to retain the full 3 year warranty. No people in the UK dont think they are God, certainly not the people who know the cars and tuning market well.

There are much more value for money packages available in the UK that use the same software to reprogram the ECU. The PPP is just a remapped ECU using ECUTEK software, it also comes with a sports cat and a higher flow backbox. They also replace the standard fuel pump with an uprated one.

My own opinion is that Prodrive charge too much and live off of their retention of factory waranty for the PPP. They are a profesional company with a good reputation but i do not consider them God, i drove an STi8 PPP and thought it was very good but no better than a remap from anyone else using the ECUTEK software.

I personally dont own a UK car, i chose to buy a Japanese spec car that has all the right bits on it as standard, i think its apauling that the UK buyer has to pay Prodrive $3265 to get the same power as you get stock in the USA and Japan on top of the premium you pay for the car in the first place, $44,000 and that is without the DCCD or BBS wheels. You dont how good you have got it over there.

And finally, talking about Remaps, the P1 was never remapped for UK fuel, it uses the exact same map as an STi5, but has slightly more sensitive Knock control to help control Det.
