Question Should I Take It?

I was called by Santa Cruz Subaru today (a reputable dealer) and my number had come up. I'm ready to take shipment for the car etc, but it was not the color I had specified to them. They told me if I wanted to wait again I'd have to go back to the very bottom of the list (last guy is #38 or so) which would mean more waiting. Oh, I also have my 500 dollar deposit down...

I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions of what I should do. The one they have is WRB, I wanted either black or white.

I thought about if I could haggle with them or complain enough that they'd leave me up at the top and sell to the next guy that wanted the WRB STi.

I'd be happy with the WRB if I could talk them down on MSRP price for it instead of waiting again for the white or black STi... I know it sounds like I'm being choosy, but I think that some of you would be as well

Any thoughts? No flames please .

I would wait if I were you. Unless this is your other choice of color, you will regret it.

I myself have a 02 WRX and 04 STI, both WRB. I just like the color
Just my take on this.

BTW, I won't pay over MSRP.

Ditto. Color is Important!

That's pretty lame that they plan to drop you back to the bottom of the list! Can you threaten to take your deposit back and buy from another dealer? Is it refunable?

Black is quite a unique color... in the sun, the gold metallic undertone is dramatic.

I am about 30 minutes from the santa cruz dealership and it seemed that the dealers there are straight forward when it comes to pricing on the STi. i dropped by the stevens creek dealership and they were playing pricing games with me while the asking price of the STi was 37k plus change. i suggest you stick with the santa cruz dealership and wait for the right color.

that's odd, the way the deposit system works over here is if you're #1 on the list, you have first dibbs on the STi's that come in, if you don't want what they have, they go to the next person, but the next shipment that comes, you get first dibbs again.

Ask your dealer if the other 37 people behind you are getting their colors at random, or if they are actually getting what they ordered. If they are getting what they ordered, then ask why the heck you are not.

I'd wager that somebody else ordered WRB, decided afterwards that they liked white better, and paid the dealer a bit of extra cash to get to what is basically your car. And your dealer is letting you be the fall guy.

Cheers,

Thanks for the posts guys. I really appreciate it. I'll definately give them a call tomorrow. I did feel pressured today as they tried to sell me the WRB STi. I was a little disappointed that they would try to do this type of thing since their record seems to be pretty good with a lot of MY02 and MY03 WRX owners.

I agree that color is important, but the prospect of getting it under MSRP... mmmm, hehe.

Keep the replies coming, I'm interested in hearing about what else I can bring up to the dealership to win over the color of my choice or to get the WRB STi for less.

Speaking for myself, color is more important than getting a 500$ off MSRP or whatever... Depends, I like to see the blue STi but I won't have one so for me, it would come to a little argument as somebody said in the thread "Is the other 37 people are getting random colors"... You should keep your position...

When I put down my deposit, the dealer filled out an "order" which stated my color combination only (no options). They explained that I could request any options that I wanted, but that MAY delay the delivery considerably. I told them that I preferred no options, but would take whatever came, as long as it was the color combo that I wanted. It came earlier than I expected (1st week June).

I would look at your receipt for your deposit. Does it state your color preference? If so, I would hold tight and demand that they are not offering the car that I ordered. Hey, we have this really cherry 01RS.......

I'd wait for the color you want. once the initial euphoria wears off, you're going to be slightly dissappointed that you didn't get exactly what you wanted.

and...did the salesperson tell you that, or the sales manager? I'd demand the next STi available in your color, and if they can't do that, tell them you want the OWNER's contact info.

it's not acceptable for them to drop you to the bottom of the list. There are plenty of places to buy STi's without hassles for MSRP.

Good Luck!

I talked to Sandy when mine came, and i wanted white/gold, but the one that came was black/gold, so i told him that I wanted first dibs on the one that came with my color, but he was pretty adamant that the way they're doing it now is how they've been doing it and it won't be fair to the people behind me if i just got to jut in front of them every time a new one came.......its a good thing i like black also.

Definately talk to them though, very nice people down there you might be able to work something out

the people behind have the option of taking the car that he turns down too. He specified a color, and is waiting for the car he specified.

It's not fair to you, that someone behind you on the list gets the next car, even if it's the exact car YOU ordered, before them.

still disagree?

I just called up Santa Cruz Subaru. I just got rotated back to the end... but I guess that's ok since there's only 12 people in front of me (how the number went from 37 to 12, I guess it was a misunderstanding, like the last person on the list was #37 and the 25 people before have already taken delivery or have dropped off the list). I guess this 12 person wait won't be too bad.

Oh well, all is good. Sandy was pretty reasonable on the phone, so no harsh feelings or anything towards the dealership. Just don't like to wait .

It's just stupid for you to be bumped down to the bottom of the list. If they didn't get your preferred color this time, you should have first pick of the next batch.

U should get the very next white or black they get!!!!.. Make some noise, pretend u p$ssed, be loud, make sure other customers start looking your way, the dealer will be quick to make a deal with u.
Dont accept getting to the bottom of the list, or excepting blue, unless u know u will be happy with blue..

Don't worry outferno, you're not personally getting shafted. Sandy told me the same thing when none of the cars in this allocation matched my color combo choice. That's just how they're doing it. You either take it or you can move back to the bottom of the list and take your chances again. It's not the way that I would've done it - but it's their list and they can run it as they see fit and I'll respect that.

Sandy seems like a cool guy and the dealership has a pretty stellar rep, so I'm just chalking it up as a policy they don't want to change. Our other choices in the area aren't the greatest (Stevens Creek with their shady practices, Carlsen there's nothing bad about but last I checked they had a rather long list, and then no real guarantees of <MSRP at any other bay area dealerships that I'm aware of), so I'm sticking with Santa Cruz as well.

I'm glad you guys are ok with the practice, and it's definitely a good thing to stick with a dealer you are happy with. but...the rotating list thing really stinks. Do you have to take the first car that comes in, regardless of color, wheel color, or options? That really is bad for people who don't want factory audio, or don't want a nice hole drilled for a boost gauge they don't want.

sounds like a ploy to make people not want to wait longer, and encourage them to accept whatever car with whatever extra options they don't want, just to hold their spot in line, or even to let the car fall all the way out the bottom of the list to a walk up buyer where they can mark it up. You can either go to the bottom of the list and wait an indeterminate amount of time, or you can "decide" to accept this car that isn't the color you want, and has an extra 5k of options tacked on...doesn't seem too fair to me.

For those in the Bay Area:

I managed to buy my STi a week ago for MSRP from Stevens Creek. They never really had a buy list since they said they were going to sell it to the highest bidder anyway. But once there shipment came in and I started negotiating with them and they eventually got down to MSRP. I am not sure if they still have any in stock but it might be worth a shot to go down there and tell them you are willing to buy it for MSRP.

Try Ted Atanus and tell them Jared sent you. Over the phone you won't get a promise for msrp, but once you show up you can work them down to it if you are willing to get up and leave.

And I know they don't have that great of a reputation, but if you know what to expect from dealers, it shouldn't be a bad experience.
