Default OT but somewhat related octane question

Why is 92+ fuel not permitted in California?

Is octane a pollutant ?

If so why did we replace lead by another pollutant ?

Octane higher than 91 octane is certainly permitted in California, and higher octane doesn't necessarily mean higher pollution.

The reason you guys are getting 91 octane is because the oil companies in California all share a common gasoline pipeline system, and on August 1, 2001, they switched that pipeline system from 92 octane to 91 octane.
