Default Boston Acoustic Z6? Anyone?

Can anyone comment on these speakers? My local retailer claims they are the best out there, and estimates that I can get them for $750/pr. Still quite a bit more than the focal poly kevlars I was considering. It looks like Boston has strict rules on their sales (and pricing), b/c no one is allowed to sell them online or through mail order.

I commented on them here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=387735

They are the best. Focal doesn't come close if you ask me. Cost on them is somewhere around $540, so the closer you can get to that, the better. (MSRP is $1k)

In order of quality, I would go in this order (for speakers popular on this forum)

1. Boston Z6
2. Diamond Audio Hex
3. Focal Polykevlar
4. MB Quart Q series

EDIT - also, the online sales thing is becoming more common. Kicker is starting to disregard ALL warranty claims for items purchased online. I guess a lot of websites regularly get in trouble for selling used/returned items that are marked as new.

I also have bought a set of Z6's, not installed yet though. Unfortunately I wont be able to enjoy them for a couple more weeks because I am out of the country right now. However I will be coupling them with a single Boston Pro 12.5LF in a 1.0ft sealed box..should rock.

Boston Acoustics used to be my favorites, until I listened to Focal's Polykevlar series. Of course this is comparing to the Boston Pro Series 6.5's I used to own as well. Another person recommend Diamond's Hex Series above Polykevlar, however, the midbass driver in the 165K2 is probably one of the best ever made. I've listened to both side by side and while the Diamond does have a more relaxed sound coming from the tweeter, the midbass don't even come close to one another. With proper eq'ing of the tweeter of the 165's, they sound worlds ahead of the Hex Series.

I wish I could compare them to the z6 but I haven't heard them yet. See if you can find local Boston/Focal dealers and do your own audition.

I didn't really listen to the mid driver on the focals... I have seperate midbass drivers, so I was judging my comparison mainly on the tweeters.

Thanks for the info-although they may be the best, I'm not sure I can justify that kind of cash, when it looks like the diamond audio & MB Quarts are 1/3 the price and still very well-liked speakers (law of diminishing returns I guess). I'll go listen to them this weekend & see if I can tell the difference.

I thought that when I got my Quarts ($230/pair)... but once I heard the Z's, money suddenly became unimportant.

How do they compare to the Focal Utopia's? I thought those were Focal's top speakers? The midrange on the Z's is phenominal. I compared them with the MB Quart Q's on 100 JL watts a side. The Q's boom a little more, but the Z's are more clear. They don't really like to get into the lower midbass too much though. I may do something with that. Have to get my sub in though and see how they match up. The Focal 5Ws seems to be looking very nice if I need some more midbass.

The Boston Zs are the best components I've ever heard.

Better than Focals, Diamond, Mbquart, a/d/s.....but you must remember that YOUR ears determine what is best. If you love flash in your music and an extremely bright sound than Boston probably isn't for you. If you want clear, natural sounding music with the smoothest transition from end to end you can definitely justify the price of the Zs. I know I have and they will be in my STI after tomorrow.

Personally I don't believe the Mbquarts are in the same league...the first time I heard the Qs I thought they were pretty good...until I REALLY listened to them. Mbquarts tend to cause fatigue at moderate volume and I know many respectable shops feel the same way.

What anyone looking to purchase components (not just high end ones like those above) must do is take the time and listen to them. Even if you must sit for 30-45mins with a bunch of music it will be worth it in the end.....even better if you can hear them in a variety of cars. You should take into account peoples thoughts but you need to hear/make the decision for yourself.

One last thing.....Boston rules!!! (did that help u?? haha)
