Unhappy Oil filter leak or just spillage?

Hey guys,

I'm kinda worried. I just did my 4th or 5th oil change, and I'm getting a little drop of oil on the bottom of my filter now. I wiped it off and then it came back.

When I installed it, I took special care to wipe down the mating surface, lube the gasket, and prime the filter beforehand. I've tightened it as tight as I can by hand (which has been sufficient in past oil changes).

Could it be that this is just excess oil draining from the outside lip of the filter from when I primed it? I was kind of messy when I did that and I just dumped a bunch of oil all over the filter. There was still some oil pooled around outside the rubber gasket when I installed it.

I guess that's probably what it is, but I just want to make sure it's not a defective gasket or something serious like that. Has this ever happened to anybody else?

As always, thanks for the feedback!

Steven

what you're describing definately sounds like it. If it were a leak at the o-ring I would expect more oil to accumulate and drip down to the floor. On my second most recent oil change it would take a few days to appear on the filter but never enough to drop.

Yeah, I think that was it. I wiped it off twice and it hasn't come back yet.

Thanks for your input!
