I just though it'd be helpful for people who want to do the front end converison and what they need
if u have a 97 + impreza you'll need 2.5RS hood with scoop and vents 2.5RS front bumper cover with fog lamps and brackets for the fog lamps ((you might need the 2.5RS bumper bar)) if u have a 97 - impreza you'll need same as 97+ but you'll also need 97+ headlights 97+ grill you will need a 2.5RS front bumperbar u could get an aftermarket grill for the 97+ for headlights u could get 99+ since 99-98 have a defused headlight or go with some morrettes is there anything I'm missing? questions comments? i kno when I first got my subaru I wanted to know what I needed for a converison so I though it'd be helpful

With my experiance, I would highly suggest getting the updated bumper beam to go with the updated skin. It's only 4 bolts that need to be removed, so it is easier than tearing your current bumper beam to shreds.
[shameless plug] And the kartboy fog lamp brackets make mounting Hella 500 fog/driving lights a breeze. The wiring was the only PITA that I had. Not finding the right wires, but snaking the wires through holes and other places to get them down to the lights. Buying the pre-wired harnesses is also a huge recommendation. Feel free to ask me questions, I'll do my best to answer them. AJ |

Kinda related, is the 98 L model bumper beam the same as the RS bumper beam? I'm getting a new bumper for my car, and want to know if I'll have to hack up the stock bumper beam.

Good idea for a thread.
You do not have to do all of this in one big swoop. You can use your pre-MY97 headlights with the MY97+ hood. You will have to remove your old grill though. You cannot use the MY97+ headlights with the pre-MY97 hood however. The MY97+ grill can be used with a MY97+ hood and the pre-MY97 headlights. There will just be a gap in the upper, inner corner between the grill, headlights, and hood. The bumper skin update can be done seperately from the hood/headlights. Foglights and brackets are not needed. You can just opt to install the foglight covers and save yourself the headache. I do believe you need a MY99-01 RS ( or STi lightweight) bumper beam to update the front bumper skin. Rear bumper and beam is the same between the Ls and the RSs for the most part. -Jon |

NOPE......
I have a 93 L Wagon and it has powered mirrors. They are just black, and a little more square then my 00 RS units. I have done the front end conversion but to a 97 OBS front end. On the RS the front beam has an extra piece welded below the main beam that wraps around the radiator inlet opening, where as the L and OBS is the same and only is the main beam. I do plan to later get a 99-01 RS front bumper, or may opt for a replica 22b front skin, but wanted to get rid the of the old 93 bumper ASAP, so opted for a 2000 OBS unit (The price was right )The rest of the car is being swapped as well. (Engine/Tranny/Interior/Suspension/Wheels/Tank/wiring......heck, let me just say everything and be done with it). Cheers EddyL. |

As for comparison next to stock lights, I'm not sure. The Hella 500's are 55W bulbs (with the HD wiring setup, you could easily put 85W or 100W H3 bulbs in there, oooohhh). The only thing that I can think of is that the fog lights fluted pattern really throws an awesome amount of light right infront of the car. And it casts it off onto the side of the road as well. I've never tried the driving lights, but it'd be a simple swap of the lenses (they're just kinda expensive, so buy the acrylic covers as well, a very worthwhile investment). I'll see if I can scan in or take some pictures of the lights on and stuff in the coming nights. AJ |

![]() Here you can see the different types of mirrors. Oldest mirrors are in the left and newest mirrors are on the right. You can see the progression from square shaped to rounded. -Jon Last edited by stimpy; 07-21-2003 at 10:31 AM. |

Jon,
I have those black "Square" Mirrors on my 93....and they are powered. I'll try and post a photo. I think that as far as the mirrors are concerned, it is only cosmetic, and can be both Manual and Powered in all styles. It all comes down to what package came on the car new. Ed |

Quick question then. I have a 93 L and want to know if the version 1-4 style bumper skin will fit, or do I have to buy lightweight beam no matter what? This q stumped one of the guys at RalliSpec, heh!
-Joe Oh yeah if you have a 93-96, you don't have to update headlights, RS hood will hang ovr a bit, but looks fine. As for the grill I can't remember if the guy replaced the grill or had nothing there. Someone on here did it, has pics. |

I'm pretty sure that my RS hood would NOT close with my MY96 grill. The grill is currently off my car. The RS hood fit just fine over the headlights though. There will just be a gap in the inner top corners of the headlights and, as of yet, I have been unable to find a grill that would work with the old headlights and the new hood.
I do have an update as to grill compatabilities though. The updated grill will NOT bolt in with the older style headlights. The older headlights are slightly wider than the new ones so the grill does fit between them and the lower mounting tabs are in slightly different locations. If I were a guessing person, and I usually am, I would think that the Ver I-IV would fit your bumper beam. The RS uses a Ver V/Vi bumper skin it would definitely be needed for it. Contact suberboy, as he has a Ver IV on his MY93. -Jon Last edited by stimpy; 07-24-2003 at 03:31 PM. |

I recently reinstalled my MY96 grill onto my car. The car has a 2001 Outback Sport hood, MY96 headlights, and MY96 grill. Everything went together just fine. There is a small gap between the grill and the hood because the updated grill is slighly taller.
My original assumption that this would not work was because my hood latch (mounted on the hood) was bent and preventing the hood from shutting properly. -Jon |

yep if you read the whole thread you'd know you can do that lol. the difference between the 97-01 fenders compared to your 96 fenders is 97+ has no molding on the fender pre 96 cars don't have these moldings. as far as everything else I listed what you needed silly!

I need the whole assembly that connects to the 99-01 housing. I called subaru and they dont sell just the wiring. What to do? Is there some universal thing i should buy? I checked autozone and they had nothing that would work. Can anyone provide a picture of the wiring i need or a part #?
