I know of a guy with the plate "MXGRIP", but last I talked to him, he didn't drive a TT.

Yeah, I know him. He's a cool guy, and yeah, he drives a TT these days.

He's got eternal "cool guy" status in my book for not knocking my head off when I almost rear-ended him at NHIS.

And he's faster than me.

Wrong for his mods or wrong for his car? He was in the same class as my stock WRX when he was stock.

I blame Boston BMW's wonky car classes.

So, what happened? Did you buy the STi he was supposed to? He seemed like he really wanted it.

And yes, Steve is very fast!! Always kicked my butt...like that's hard, right?

Edit: I was wondering if you were the same Bill Burns that runs with the miata club.

Yes, I used to run with the Miata club. Steve and I both had orders on the new STi until he drove the TT and he fell in love with it. I don't think he ever liked it when Subaru went from the 2 door RS to the 4 door WRX's, he likes coupes. I was surprised too when he went with the TT but it is a real hoot to drive, especially now that it is chipped. I looked at them too but I really need the utility of 4 doors.

That reminds me. I meant to show your brother this video from Mosport. And there's also been some discussion on what happened that he might be interested in.

Could you pass the URLs along to him? I don't think I ever knew his handle on the board so I couldn't PM him or email him.

I will let him know about the video and discussion. He'll be interested in that I'm sure. He already has complained about the ABS at autocrosses and pulls the fuse to disable it.

Tsk. Tsk. Just don't run any national events like that.

By the way, just read that thread on Braking. It's a very good read and sheds some light into what's happened to me once by surprise.

Once I learned what it was, it's made some difference... going against all instinct to let up on the brakes then re-apply when you're brain is screaming 'BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE!'

Wrong for his mods.
He is chipped and running in STX. The chip modifies boost, which knocks him out of STX.

Which sucks because the last thing I need is someone faster than me being booted into my class

Another reason I like SM. Unlimted brake mods. Yank the fuse if you feel like it

Actually, his chip has a couple different programs and I'm pretty sure he said he runs the stock program at auto-xes. I'm not sure where the falls in terms of legality, but he really is just as fast as he drives.

Oh yeah! I think this is the chip with the valet mode that prevents the RPMs from going above 2K or so.

I would love to have one of those for the WRX.

His chip does have several programs and I think he is running it in stock mode in the AutoX's but I'm not entirely sure. He does drive very well though and his times reflect that.

Doesn't matter if he runs the stock map or not, it's still illegal. He can't run it just because he has the capabilities of running another map. How do we know he didn't switch maps during runs? (Just playing devil's advocate.)

The wrecked TT mentioned above runs in my class with COM and he's got a chip that he takes out when he runs the time trials. The same principle applies: how do you know he really took it out?

I happen to believe that he does take it out. But seeing as there's no prize money, who really cares? I'm of the mindset that so long as the competition is just for fun, a person's word that they're class-legal is good enough for me.

There's only been one case where I was tempted to protest someone. It was an S2000 trying to run in SSGT with all of his interior stripped and a huge wing on the back of his car. Rumour was he had done things under the hood as well. Now, I wouldn't have protested him based just on that. It was the fact that I'd dog him through the slow parts of the course and then on the straight, rather than pointing me by, he'd put his foot to the floor and run away from me. That pissed me off. Someone else wound up protesting him though, and I never had to bother.

The alternative 's advocate viewpoint.

Easy...you make him show you.

Wow, that's aweful nice of you. SO, are you guaranteeing that no one is going to protest someone else because you're gonna take their word for it? If so, I plan on running a Stage 4 in stock class. Of course, I wouldn't, but there are people out there like that.

I remember reading Tom Hoppe saying that he would protest anyone running a Ecutek reflash in STX, no matter what map they were running. This is because with the Delta Dash, you can change maps. That's the reason I'm assuming KC went with a Vishnu Unichip, instead of a reflash.

Edit: BTW, you're talking about road racing, while we're talking about auto-xing. I'm more familiar with auto-xing, and that's what I'm relating to.

... And pulled it out and will use stock engine management for the rest of the year.

Actually, Toms now on the fence about the ECUTeck for the simple fact that he now has the tools (computer and ecu) to actually check. He's running it now as a matter of fact.

However, I sat in his car, I saw the data, I verified his is not altering boost, and that it cannot either. It doesn't have the user tune capability. (Delta Dash shows certain menus in that case).

It's as simple actually as sitting in the car, setting up a boost gauge and looking at the numbers (and being familiar with what various chips for various manufacturers offer and how they activate/deactivate settings like valet, etc...). Locally, I could care less, but there are some that could care more becasue what he does could affect their point standings.

Example.. BMW events. They use SCCAs PAX to determine final placing for their specific classes.

*if* you have a car running STX with boost mods, it really is a SM car. Now what happens is he/she is running a softer pax, and will place higher in the rankings in the class than if he/she ran the proper SM pax because SM and STX on street tires run in the same class.

Now I don't know what mods or ECU he's running in the TT. I don't even know what version of TT it is. However, something to keep in mind for the next event:

ECU mods/blow off valves, boost controllers that alter boost are illegal in STX. If it can be switched on course, it can be protested. I bet there will be papers filed at nationals this year from other drivers. This is why I'm not even going to go NEAR touching my ECU. (Again... ECUTeck, you can switch maps by flooring the throttle and hitting the rear defroster button... VERY simple to do on course, just as you leave the line even)

Super green?

My brother started the autocrossing while the TT was bone stock and I'm sure has just not updated his class yet. It wasn't until just recently that he did some work to the car. I think this was the first BMW event he did with changes to the car.
