Default Constant Throttle surge and Detting ... frustrated

I just got my car today ... this morning

I hear consistent detonation. very intermitent ... but a very noticeable shhh ... light detting type sound ... OK but that's not the bad thing ...

I have HORRIBLE throttle surging. There must be a faulty TPS sensor .. or drive-by-wire servo ... or some such. Car goes in tomorrow, no doubt. This is no anal-new-owner-hypocondriac-thinks-it-might-be-surging type of surging ... this is a BrwoarrrrBrwoarrrrBroawrrr type of surging ... up and down ... up and down .. every gear any speed.

Even out of gear. If I try to hold the throttle ar ~ 2k ... it will hold for a few seconds and then begin to dip up and down about 500 rpm on a very consistent rythm

under load in any gear at any RPM, this means that i get a horribly consistent push and pull from the throttle. It is audible to all passengers ... I won't have anytrouble reproducing this for a service tech ... the probelm is that I can't get it not to do it. It is most noticeable in lower gears. If I try to keep it at say ~2k RPM in 1st or second, I get horrible kangarooing.

It is the worst when tryin to maintain a consistent throttle position. When feathering or slightly rolling the throttle, the surge is much less pronounced or even goes away.

Anyone else had this?

oh and there is another first day problem I'll post in a follow-up ... this one more frustrating

Sounds like the ETC is bad somehwere as you said, definitely not normal. They sould have caught it at the PDI.

As far as hearing a "shhhh" sound, I doubt you're getting any pinging, there are a lot of induction sounds on the car...

I had a Dinan Supercharged M3 that pinged badly and eventually melted the engine.

.. the sound is quite similar ... but I hope it is something else ... what leads me to believe that it is pinging is that, as I am cruising, and checking out my throttle surge ... I will try to keep the throttle at exactly the same position .... the throttle will then begin to surge ... BrwoarrrrBrwoarrrrBroawrrr ... after about ~10-20 seconds I will start to here a shhhhhh ... that dissappears as soon as I lift the throttle .... it sounds like a pingy type shhhh ... if not a bit more even the the pingy shhh that killed my M3.

The two issues seem intertwined ... although I will admit that the detting could be just my hypersensitivity brought on by my fixation with the surging

I don't think a full PDI was ever done ... I bought the car in Boston with 7 mi on the clock ... never saw it until this morning when it arrived in Dallas ... with 7 miles on the clock ... I asked them to leave all of the plastic on, but prep it for delivery ... I have no idea how thorough they were with the prep

Regardless ... I'll try to get this sorted tomorrow

I picked up my STi with 9 miles and don't have any drivability problems. At max TQ in second gear there is a det. problem...

Could also be an intake leak.

check the TB to intercooler hose. Mine from the factory had one of the hose clamps slip off, and the intercooler wasn't seated right so even if the hoseclamp was on right it likely would have leaked some.

Also The ECU is a learning ECU. So it might need some time to get its head straight even if everything is perfect mechanicly.

My dealer says that it is the O2 sensor ... they are going to plug a new one in tomorrow .... we'll see

Then why did the check engine light never come on?
