Default How to remove fuel + temp gauge needles?

Hello all...
I am installing indiglo gauges in my 91 legacy turbo...(I know...ricey) But am having a problem. After a ton of trying, I got the instrument cluster out w/o taking out the dash. I got the fuel and temp gauges out, but attached to the bezel by the post to the needle. They came out toghether. I got the speedo and tach out and slide needle first (carefully) into the indiglos. But because the temp and fuel are attached to the original bezel, which it seems the indiglos replace...I need to either cut the bezel of those gauges, or remove the needle and the cap the needle is attached to that goes on top of the post leading to the needle, preventing the bezel from sliding off. I'm sorry...that wasn't to clear. Does anyone know how to take the needles off these gauges?
thanks
Micum

Take a couple of spoons and place the spoon part under the pointers. One on each side... opposite from each other. Pry it up very carefully. The needle should come off. The curve of the spoon provides some leverage. Using two at the same time helps ensure that you are pulling straight up, so as not to bend the shaft.

Hope that does it.

Rich

(And that's all if I understood you correctly! )

thanks richeich...let me make sure I understand. Are you saying put the spoons under the actual needle? Or under the cap like thing from which the needle protrudes? The cap being over the shaft...
It appears this cap must be removed before removing needles, or that they are one unit...unless the needle pulls straight out from the cap, perpendicular to the gauge face...instead of up away from the gauge face.
This would be easier with pictures...
Thanks so much
Micum

Well, since you're talking about an older Legacy, I'm not sure I can confirm the whole cap thing. I put white face overlays on my gauges, and just pulled the pointers off the shafts with the spoons. I don't recall any caps. Or if they were there, they were just part of the pointers. I'll have to look at mine later today and see what it looks like.

We had a group buy on the white face gauge overlays about 18 months ago. Maybe a search for 'white face gauges' with and unlimited time frame here in the Legacy section would reveal some pics from that adventure.
