Default How many RS owners skipped WRX to STI

I know a lot of STI owners are 1st time Subaru owners but...

How many STI owners here are former RS owners or GC Impreza owners that did not get a WRX and recently bought a STI?

How is the experience from the GC platform over to the GDB-C (new non-bug-eye) platform?

And how many skipped manual AWD cars with 150 BHP or more?

ME!

I went from a 1998 RS (Rally Blue and one of first on this shore in Aug. 97), sold it in spring of 2003 and have been waiting for my STi since then. I've been driving a Honda Oddessey mini-van since...oh the humanity!!

When the bug-eyed WRX came out a couple 2-3 yrs ago, I was really into buying one especially since I lobbied hard with SOA to bring it over. When it did come, I wasn't thrilled with the looks and thought that I'd wait a year. Then I heard a tiny winy rumor about the Sti. I held out and am glad that I waited. However, there is nothing to say that I wouldn't mind owning the bug-eyed WRX cause I think it has character too

My patience has almost left me now. I feels like I'm waiting to get my drivers license when I was 16 all over again....hehehe

(sry, had to try the banana guy)

Truly,

Davis

I went from my MY00 RS to an STi. I don't think I would have been happy with a WRX. A couple of friends own them and from driving those, I know I wouldn't be happy with the lack of low-end grunt. Plus, I don't like the looks of the MY02-03 front end.

The big difference (other than power, duh) is you can definately feel the weight difference. The STi feels like a boat compared to my RS. I can just imagine what all the RS-Ts out there must feel like to drive.

I also went from an RS to an STi, I still have my 99 RS coupe and love it, but the differences between it and my STi are like night and day. Everything feels different in the car, though I still prefer the looks of the GC8 style body over almost any other Japanese car.

I picked up my new Sti yesterday, and my 00rs is still for sale!! (hint, hint). But yah. Its..... different. The car feels a lot bigger, and heavier. Its also a lot harder to place.. like parking and stuff. I don't know if its 'cuz I'm not used to the car.

Very good..

I test drove the STI recently and it does feel a tilt more heavier than the WRX, can be felt when driving at low speeds.

I've heard of RS with WRX engine conversions, now imagine with the STI 2.5L conversion?

I went from a '99 RS to an STi. What a difference. As others have said it is a bigger heavier car but it's the 4 doors and the insane power that always gets me. I first tried to drive it like I did my RS but I was a bit lead footed with the RS. Trying the same lead foot technique will send you to red line quickly. That was the biggest thing to get used to.
One other thing that is still taking some getting to know you time is the handling. It really handles quite differently. My RS actually felt more nimble than the STi. The STi feels like it handles more like my old Mustang when you enter into a corner. It changes handling characteristics with some throttle but it doesn't handle quite as sharply as I expected. This could be a result of a number of factors. The added weight, my comfort factor and knowing my RS for 4 years and finally the added speed with the STi.
Those are just my thoughts on the handling of my new car.

As far as the fit and finish compared to my RS it absolutely doesn't feel spartan or plain as some have said. It is very nice inside and pretty quiet until you hit some sharp bumps and that lighter colored pavement (maybe its concrete) that they have been using around the New York/ Jersey area. That is when it is Very noisey.
Aside from now having car payments again I do not regret my purchase for a second.
My Silver/Silver STi doesn't get as many looks and stares as my Blue RS did. That is good in my book.

Still driving my MY99 2.5RS while I am waiting for my 2004 STi. Dealer says it will be here at the end of July. I will be keeping the 99 RS for some time while I pay for the STi, can't have enough cars!

I am a former 2000 2.5 RS sedan owner. I bought it because the salesman said the WRX would never come here, then three months later the WRX was announced. I was PO'd. But then I autocrossed my RS, and loved it.
I sold the RS but wish that I could have kept it, I still had a few tweeks I would have liked to try.
I love the STi but I am still in the break in period. It is like twice of everything that the RS was. Which is good in everything but the weight. I agree with the previous post about it feeling less nimble, and reminicent of a Mustang (I had one too!). But I have along way to go to have the confidence level I had developed with my RS.
I think a couple of autocrosses and a track day will get me where I need to be with this beasty.

Are you kidding? I can't even wait for my car to come back from the shop, let along wait to go through a WRX on my road to an STI. Now all I need are the funds and a major insurance discount.

How come you sold evo?

My dad had a subaru about 15 years ago... i never got to drive it though... since then, the STi that i'm getting next year will be my first subaru. I did drive some audi quattro's but I didn't know anything about AWD or Turbos or even engines back then...

Currently own a 2000RS I too am a lead foot, zipping it to 5000 RPMs often.

I am looking forward to buying a 2005 STi next May/June.

The wait is very difficult! But I am looking forward to some of the kinks - I mean pings - being worked out of the package next year.

(Oh yeah, I am also another former Mustang owner)

I went from my 99 RS (bought new in dec 98), and now own an STI. I could never get myself to like the bug eye WRX's.

I just wish the sti drivetrain was in my old RS. I also noticed like many others that the STI feels bloated, and heavy compared to the RS. But the power!!! OMG its awesome.

I skipped the WRX because I didn't want a lousy 4-door. However, 300hp was enough to allow me to overlook that major annoyance.

I too would love to put the STi drivetrain in my 98. What a glorious engine and shifter for the STi. What a beautiful, lightweight body on the GC8. Merge the two, and you got something good going.

Oh, I'd want to move over the STi suspension, brakes, seats, instrument cluster, and wheels, too.

Anyone want to buy an STi with a 1998 2.5l turbo engine in it?

I am about to make a jump from a 2000 rs to either the sti or evo...... i cannot make up my mind for the life of me....i need help, it's all I think about. I love subaru and would hate to leave, but the evo reminds me of my current rs in so many ways...body style, handling/tossability. The sti feels so heavy when I test drove it, it hurts, but the power is reedonkulous. So many =/- with these cars, i don't know what it's going to come down too...I'd sure miss the suby meets.

Skipped wrx because of bug-eye styling, lack of low end. Just IMO. Def. a sweet car.

I would ask you guys to help me, but we'll wind up with another evo vs sti forum, and another locked, bumped or removed thread.

I'll just have to drink it off tonight....

The EVO is just as heavy as the STI and tossability is no better than the WRX. The only reason being the STI has the front locking diff that makes it difficult to rotate and toss on the curves. If you want a lightweight and power, then you can't be looking at either EVO or STI. A modded WRX or Turbo RS fits you better.

Of course the EVO VI would be the best!
