Default prodrive muffler or custom exhaust?

I finally have decided to get an axel-back exhaust and have done my research on the prodrive. It's just it seems a little expensive for only the sound. So i was thinking of a getting a magnaflow SS muffler (the one that vinshu uses on their turboback) custom welded - ( do i get it welded to the pipe that goes to the stock muffler or do i get a new pipe that goes from the end of the mid-pipe to the muffler?). I need stainless steel b/c i go to New England frequently. The prodrive is probably $380 then shipping. The magnaflow is like $110 and prob another $90 for install so lets say $200 total. The only problem is that the magnaflow might be too loud, but i am afraid the prodrive might be too quiet. Can anyone comment on the two? i have listened to sound clips of the prodrive but they have all been so close to the muffler so its hard to tell (if any one wants to make a sound clip from further away or driving by that would be great ) I would like to only spend 200 but i don't want it to be too loud. Any comments would be appreciated, thanks!

You have a sedan - I will bet than you can put on a straight-pipe and not have a noise complaint.

Try this - pull off your muffler and drive around a bit. It will be louder than if you had a straight pipe (since the straight pipe does direct the sound to the rear of your car), but it is a free experiment.

P.S. I love my Prodrive, but I'm a wussy old man with a wagon.

if you are keeping your cats in place you can probably go staight pipe.

if you EVER think of going catless get the prodrive. you will waste money welding a pipe onto your stock pipes then having to hack it off again and re-weld.

If you are in north NJ come by the boston market meet tonight and listen to my car. prodrive muffler with one cat.

I have a prodrive bolted up to a TSX stealthback with no cats. It gives a nice rumble when off boost, but under full boost it comes to life.

I believe I paid $380 shipped for my Prodrive. Its a really nice piece and I don't feel that it was "overpriced". "Pricey" maybe, but not overpriced. After all, you get what you pay for though. Sound-wise its definitely one of the more subtle exhausts out there for the WRX. Its alot lower pitch than the stock exhaust and pretty tame during normal driving. When you get into the throttle it sounds more aggressive and very cool. Its the perfect exhaust for someone who doesnt want to stand out in the crowd ALL the time. When you nail it, heads do turn though. At 28 years old, I wouldnt want a louder exhaust than this.

PS - I am running it with a TXS stealthback+hiflow cat.

I havent really noticed the stealthback making the Prodrive much louder. The TXS downpipe makes the turbo and wastegate noises, etc much more audible though... Its a nice setup, but if you're looking for a flat-out loud exhaust then it might be too quiet. I would describe the sound as refined more than loud. When you get into the throttle the Prodrive sounds really good, but not necessarily loud....
