Default Glove Compartment Noise

After opening the glove compartment for the first time, it now makes a constant squeak/rattle as I drive. It sounds like it is rubbing against something that it shouldn't be. I plan on taking a closer look tonight but wondered if I was the only one that has this problem?

Mine does the same thing unless I leave it open. My stereo is being installed today and tomorrow. Problem hidden!

Let me know if you figure it out.

The rattling glove box is a standard feature on the WRX, looks like they carried it over to the STi. Mine was bad for a while, but has been fairly quiet lately, so I never bothered to fix it. My intention was to use some padding (rubber, or the felt pads you use for furniture) along the top edge of the door. I pointed it out to the dealer at the beginning, and they didn't have a way to fix it.

I had the same problem on my WRX - very annoying. I bought some 1/2" adheasive weather stripping from Autozone and basically outlined the glovebox opening with it. Rattle has been gone since. Cheap, effective, and even looks stock.

Haven't gotten to get out there yet...still at work, but I think it might be something along the lines of the trunk release problem. I might just be able to move the hinges down a tad. The reason I haven't solved it by now is that it only does it while it is moving, and I don't trust anyone I know around here to drive while I sit over there trying to figure it out. Anyone want to volunteer to come to Jackson, MS and drive my STI while I get up under there and check it out?

Thanks for the tip. That rattle has been the only annoying issue I have had with the STI.

Got the chance to get under there this weekend. All it took for me was to take a phillips-head and tighten any screw I could find. I tightened the two that are underneath the glovebox as well as all of the ones on the inside panel of the actual glovebox door. Haven't heard a peep since. Hope this helps! I also fixed my trunk latch while I was out there.

I don't know if the glovebox is the same as in the WRX...but you might try this:

Remove your glovebox and look for a white plastic clip mounted on a vertical "post". There are a bunch of these underneath the trim piece where the dash meets the windshield as well (at least on the WRX). If you shake the glovebox, you might hear this white plastic clip rattle. Take it off, apply some silicone sealant to the mounting point, and put it back on. Bye-bye rattle.
