Default Car Alarm?

Anyone looked into installing an aftermarket alarm for their STI yet? I've been looking into 2-way, but it seems the more I look the more it seems all hype. Even on the other boards like S2k boards and 3SI boards seem to think alarms are pretty useless in general unless you have something like lowjack or a $700+ alarm. I was looking at spending somewhere around $300-500 but it doesn't seem like there is anything out there that is really worthwhile. Any other input?

Edwin

I've been looking up that alarm, the clifford and the compustar. From what a few other users have said is that the little pager does not have great range at all. Especially in urban areas, I think that the Viper claims a mile of range or a half mile, most people get abrely half of that. Is it even worth it with less than a half mile of range? My car will be with me up at school and the campus is pretty large so I don;t if their is enough range for what I'm looking for.

want better range? viper has the new gps system. you can interface it with any aftermarket alarm systems and receive phone or email messages indicating your vehicle has been violated.

also, if you install the directrack system to an alarm with ESP2 such as the viper 790xv you can remote start and unlock your vehicle via telephone or web site.

I've got the 790xv. I haven't traveled far enough for the thing to go out of range on me yet.........but otherwise it is a great alarm so far.

The Clifford Matrix series falls in your price range, and are very good, IMHO. I have a Matrix 2 on my STi.

i'm getting the viper 790vx in mine tomorrow. i've been wanting to put this is a car since it first came out on the market. i like the idea of having a pager to alert me if the alarm goes off. i really don't see myself being more than a half a mile from my car, so this should work wonders.

i'm getting it done at my dealership, but by a local company that does aftermarket installs for customers that don't want the subaru system. i'm getting the main unit, w/o the starter because i don't want it, tilt sensor and battery backup for $450 installed + tax. not a bad price if u ask me.

I'm getting the hornet 554t when I get my car. I was interested in the 790xv also but, the dealer I talked to told me that the viper 790xv has a crap responder unit and they keep falling apart on his customers. He recommended the hornet 554t to me instead since I really wanted a 2-way system. Its alittle cheaper also at $300 installed so y not. I figure this and the autoloc should prevent all but the most daring car thieves from jacking my ride

My remote is not bad just way to big LOL and it needs button lock or a lid like a cell phone. I place my keys in my pocket and here a "bo ppoop" and am like damit I unlocked my car from my living room but other than that all is well. Whats funny is that my car is rather far away too, so the remote works well

I have a buudy that does stereo equipment and car alarms. I am probably going with the Clifford Matrix. Probably only the Matrix1 because the Matrix2 and Matrix3 have alot of **** I don't need. Oh and I never can understand those car alarms that shut off your car a mile down the road....hmmm if I was stealing a car and it **** of on me down the road I would beat up the car or burn it. It doesn't make sense.

Well if you were chasing after the car (most guys would for at least a few blocks, until they realize that car > legs) wouldn't you rather the car be beaten up or a little singed but recoverable rather than "lemme write a report for you and we'll see what we can do" ? That and you get a chance to beat that guy down, if you're that kind of person.
