Default STi's at Subaru Ride and Drive...

FYI, what a blast. There were about 24 STi's in BeaveRun, Pittsburgh yesterday and today. (pics to ff) I haven't seen so many STi's in one place, all the colors were there.

To those who own this car and haven't seen it driven by professional race driver, you don't have any idea what your car can do on a high speed tack.
Today our instructors took us for 2 laps around the high speed track, and I can tell you that by the second lap I was ready to asks the driver to stop, I was getting nauseaus because of the speed around the turns. When we stop, the front brakes were smoking.
This driver was talking to me while he was going at 7500 RPM on the straight away. There were about 40 of us in the group and all of us were shaken, I have a different way of looking at this car and the race car drivers.
BTW, all these were captured in an in car cam to show our friends the video and specially the expletives. Actually a couple of people refused to ride because of how fast the cars were going.

Anybody know how to transfer VHS into digital video?

PS. I showed the video to someone and before he left my place he placed an order for an STi.

wow, i'd LOVE to see those vids...

easiest way to capture VHS is to get a video capture card that allows you to record to your computer straight from the VCR.

Or, if you dont' have one of those, but you DO have a miniDV or other digital camcorder, you can record to the camcorder first, then transfer via firewire/usb2 to the computer which is what I have to do... then you should compress it... mpeg isn't good enough, you should use divx or wmv9 to get a nice small format.

My dealer also was at that event, he was scared.

He told me to keep the differential in auto until I further understood the car.

I talked with my sales rep today who was in PA Tues & Wed and her voice was all hoarse and barely audible.

She said she was exhausted and lost her voice from screaming in fright. Also she went on to say that she was physically exhausted & sore from bracing herself against the car as they were "hurtled" around the track at "120 mph". She didn't care for the experience.

From the sounds of it the dealers were taken on a 'Hell Ride'.

Kalex, can you expound on this and why the Subaru drivers felt a need to scare the pants & panties off the attendees?

I'm dying to see this video of yours.

I just borrowed the video from the person I bought my STi from. I'll ask him if it's ok to post up. The most amazing thing to me was watching how fast the car on track blows by the cars stopped waiting to go.

As I'm sure you know, what seems like a hell ride to some is a cake walk to others. From what I saw of the in-car (Which was from pittsburg) they weren't pushing 10/10, more like 8.5 to 9/10. You could see that the driver was trying to throw the car through the corners to get it to slide, but almost every time it ended up in with the car having way too much traction left so he'd have an early apex and have to back offthe steering input. From what I saw, and being a racer myself I don't think it was that bad. Besides, that was the point, show people just what they are getting their hands on.

I hate to tell you this but, I was there.. it is rated 7000 rpm but unofficially it can go to 8000 rpm before it cuts off.

Anyone that was there became certified as STi, Forester turbo, and Baja turbo certified sales consultant. BTW, I was one of about 12 who aced the post test out of about 40 attendees.

The wheels are to be rotated every 2 days and replaced every third. All the cars there are stock.

I say to those who owns one, very lucky indeed.

Most of the instructors said, this car should not be on the road. He said that in a straight face.

It was not a mandatory ride. In fact Subaru told the instructors to be very conservative with their driving due to liability issues.

I was asked by my instructor if I have raced in an oval or driven with a professional before, so I believe he was just gauging how much speed he would go for.

During the presentation, they showed us cut away of the engine, transmission, center and rear diff and the clutch. I got it all in pic.

I should be able to post an album this week. I have a lot of catching to do with my work.

Im ready to lock my differential and make it behave like my RS4 Nitro powered RC car.

AWD rocks, I've been practicing drifts with my RC cars.

Soon, I'll have a little mini STi to go with my full size STi.

my salesman showed me his video today. it was funny, as he began the two lap video he actually put a message in it for me, pretty cool he was thinking of me as he was being hurled around going 130mph. i also talked to a couple other salesman that went. they were absolutely blown away. i have a disc they got there that talks about the sti. my salesman is letting me take a look at it. also, they were told that there is no need to baby the car until 1k miles. they were told this car was built to be driven hard right off the lot and will not affect the reliability of the vehicle. i guess they were just amazed at the craftsmanship of the sti, especially the clutch which is said to be virtually indestructable. just wanted to share those thoughts with u guys. i wish subaru would have a ride and drive for owners too.

Another way to convert will be to attach the VCR to a DV camera with A/V inputs and put it on a DV tape that way...then firewire it over to teh yu0r PC.

Some of you guys crack me up. I know two of the drivers on this program, they are very quick profesional race drivers and instructors from the UK, all the drivers on this program are British, they will not be trying to scare the pants off anyone.

The speed they will be doing will feel imense for a person with no previous experience of track driving, but it will be well below the ultimate limits this car can do.

As to not doing the break in routine, if that were the case SOA wouldnt have included a break in routine in the owners manual. The cars used in the Ride and Drive are hammered from 0 miles, but they arent the cars you will be wanting to keep for 3 years!

i'm just repeating what my salesman were told. they were told this car was made to be beat on right off the lot. i'm not the one making it up, just stating what was told to me.

These STi's were most likely at least lightly prepped for extended track duty. If so, it's likely they moved the rev limiter up, or removed it entirely since the cars were being driven by professionals that actually do know what they are doing, and wouldn't overrev it due to enthusiasm.

And as John said, these guys were likely driving well below the actual limits of the car. In most cases, people in the U.S. may driving at 10/10's of their personal driving skills, but that doesn't mean they are driving at 10/10's of the capabilities of the car itself. A full day with a STi Spec C yesterday reminded me how high those limits are. Owned by a guy that's somewhat ok as a driver, he's pushed it to his limits - but his tyres have almost no wear and tear on them because he hasn't pushed the limits of the car.

Put a sport cat and muffler combo at that time, running with a sub-computer. It needs to be adjusted, he needs better intake airflow to take advantage of the breathing, and right now rolling into the gas makes it very hard to keep your hands on the steering wheel from the acceleration. It spun all four in first - while rolling and tipping into the gas hard...

Cheers,

Paul Hansen
