Default Passed smog w/out 3rd cat

This is just an FYI, and I wondered if anyone else has any similar experiences. We just bought our 02 WRX last weekend. The previous owner has done a lot of tasteful modifications to it. Mostly APS products. One of which was an exhaust system. However, the 3rd cat is missing and I was concerned about it passing smog. I figured if I needed, I could just buy a hi flow cat to get it to pass emissions. Well, I'm happy to report that I had it checked on Tuesday. Not only did it pass, but it passed with flying colors. HC (hydro carbons) were a mere 6.6 parts per million and CO (carbon monoxide) levels were .15%. I wonder if it would pass without the up-pipe or downpipe. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. This is for Ohio E-check. Thanks

Travis

The uppipe cat is mainly for cold start emissions, so as long as your engine was warmed up, you could probably get by without that as well... then again, the only exhaust law where I live is you can't increase the size of the tip on your muffler!!!

With all the cats removed I doubt it would pass emissions (at least in MA and CA).

Agreed, and keeping one cat (high flow even) makes a big difference in your emissions and is hardly a performance issue.

I live near Dayton, and for whatever reason it seems like certain stations would pass anything. I just cringe at the thought of one of those kids getting to rev my STi in a couple of years for the test.

Hopefully we can get rid of the useless E-check in Ohio. And if anyone complains about the environment; I am all for less pollution, but like I said the E-check never picks up any problems for a lot of folks.

Isn't that pretty much a paradox?

We have a check on this one exit ramp here and my car was reading "ok, costing you money" with only my 3rd cat, but after my Cobb reflash it reads "good, saving you money".
