Cool Sacramento STI here!

Wolverine/drdray.....

For some reason, the service departments in Sac got a 2 week waiting list (ex. Maita Subaru). While in Chico, CA, they can hook you up in less than a week...testing & ECU reflash.....plus their service is alot friendlier.

ps - when are we having a STI Sac Town meet???

Thanks... Chico is quite a drive for me... STi Sac town meet sounds like a good idea! Should pursue this more on the BAIC forum!

wolverine I went to Maita Subaru (Auburn Blvd.). They know about reflash and I didn't have to prove or test or do anything. I just told them about it. Manager checked the tech articles. He then said if I have any problems with dets, make appointment and they will take care of me. So they were booked and I said that I wanted to take care of this asap, so he told me to drop by on monday and see what he can do. I drop by around lunch and he had all paper work ready for me, I just signed, got invoice for rental and was off back to work. Took 3 days to reflash. They even got me a camry for rental this time. Not that I liked it, I was just happy that it wasn’t crapy corolla.

3 DAYS!!

Having gone thru this process with FORD (99 Mustang Cobra), the reflash took about 3 hours -- the actual reflash process takes a few minutes. The data is actually transmitted to the FORD dealership based on the serial numbers on the ECU and then flashed.

There is no way it should or could take 3 Days if the dealer is truely prepared.

Anyone dyno the car before/after the reflash -- willing to bet they just took out timing and some power in the process.

For reference my 99 Cobra reflash reduced my power output by 2 RWHP corrected (not terribly significant, but certainly did NOT improve power output).

Rob.

This has been discussed earlier in the thread. The dealers are not able to reflash yet. There is a delay in distributing the new flash image/cartridge/whatever to the dealers. So for now, the ECM has to be sent to SOA and then sent back.

You could argue that SOA should have a stock of reflashed ECMs there to reduce turnaround, but then (as we discussed before) there may be things like VIN etc that are burned into the ECM from your car.

Thanks, drdray. Just dropped by today. They did not have to test drive my car at all; just hooked up their laptop to my car's dataport and took some data. They said they will send this info to Subaru and I will receive a call to set up an appointment to drop my car off. Again, 3 days to reflash, they said. So far, I am happy with the way things are going

Default Stock (unreflashed) dyno run completed

I took my car to Altered Atmosphere today and disconnected the battery for 30 minutes (also turned on the ignition to make sure all was drained). Reconnected it and then the car went right onto the dyno before it had a chance to learn anything.

Two pulls later, the peak power was revealed to be 245.7 WHP with a broad peak occurring between 5200 and 6000 RPM, falling off a bit above 6K, but staying near or above 240 all the way to redline. Didn't hear a single ping on either pull. (this is on Sunoco 94 octane). The other run (the first) peaked at 244.8.

They printed a graph with A/F ratio and WHP though, so I asked them to re-graph TQ and WHP and I'll pick those up tomorrow. They couldn't give it to me on floppy because the floppy drive in the dyno's computer was broken. :-)

The A/F ratio graph was interesting for two reasons -

1) the car runs so rich above 5000-5500 RPM that the machine can't display it. The guy running the dyno said it needs to be leaned out up there and it could make a lot more power. Maybe this explains the black soot in the tailpipe. Another guy there said all the imports seem to do this.

2) Something unusual happened on the first run. Stiffy (my car) coughed up a muffler lugie of about 2 or 3 tablespoons of water. I saw it come shooting out the tip of the pipe. Apparently this blocked the tailpipe oxygen sensor tube and caused a HUGE freaking spike (obviously an anomalous reading - it went off the scale) in the A/F ratio graph. He thought there was something wrong with the car rather than the sensing equipment, but I'm sure it was the water. It did not do this on the second run, there was no muffler lugie that time - and the A/F ratio had no weird full scale spike.

Anyway - tomorrow I pick up the WTQ vs WHP graphs and then I will get them scanned for posting.

This coming weekend Stiffy's ECU gets yanked and Monday morning konkilr will send it off to SOA for reflash.

When it comes back I will repeat the dyno runs.

Then, aside from different days/temps/humidities I will have graphic representations of same dyno, same car, same learning (i.e. none) both before and after reflash. No more butt dyno.

By the way, Stiffy almost never pings when running on Sunoco 94.
It pings more often, but still infrequently, on 93.

Hopefully Sunoco will not be out of 94 when I do the next run.

Heh.

Yes, the plate is "STI FFY", I stuck the space in there so the DMV would be less likely to figure it out - it worked.

Most folks don't get it though. They ask me what "FFY" is.

be happy, a week to have this thing sent out is no big deal....

our old saab had to have its chip flashed overseas.
the entire southeast region had maybe 4 loaner chips...

you called made an apointment, and waited 3 months untill a loaner chip was available.

then you waited 6 weeks for your original chip to get back.....

Default STi coming, what to do?

All, I have a new STi on the way. It was supposed to hit the shipping dock in California on 9/3 and head my way. I should see it around the 21st of this month. My question is, will my Subi be flashed? Or should I worry, or what do you recommend. I was on the verge of backing out of the whole deal until I read through this post. The det thing really scares me, and I am not as knowledable as some to even distinguish if I have the problem, yet alone fix it. If there isn't some kind of confirmed resolution I still may cancel the order.

Thanks all!

I've never seen a confirmed date on here. But there is information on what they check at the dealer with the proper diag equipment. I would simply tell them that you would like confirmation of the reflash before taking delivery. Shouldn't be a big deal.

I had one of the dealers check for me and they said that they were aware of the reflash, but it was not needed. The car in question is a 6/03. I assume judging by the date this thread started that yours would have the latest code.

Default Delay?

I have run into a slight snag in my plan to post before/after dyno results of my reflash. My son brought the scan tool home this weekend, and quickly discovered that it won't work on the STI. He thinks there is a module that has not been delivered to the techs that is required. He will look for this on Monday.

It is necessary to use the scan tool to pull out something like an ESN from the ECU, so that it can be tracked. I think that's what he said anyway.

So, my ECU might not get pulled until later (Tuesday?) this week.

I have an 06/03 build and haven't heard 1 ping...2000 miles, 93 octane

I'm wondering if it already had the updated ECU?

It's all good, though

Post 4-6 days...

I realize how it feels to have to leave your baby (esp. a recently purchased one) sitting at a dealer for a week. Keep in mind, though, that if Subaru's ECU is anything at all like BMW's DME, then it would have to be special ordered for each car, coded at the factory for that specific car, then installed at the dealer. In that light, a week does not seem all that ridiculous. Not to mention, the techs cannot be out on the road beating the hell out of your car if it has no ECU.

About the Techs going out on the town in your baby, Techs are paid by the job. If they do not work, they do not make money. They could care less about taking your car out and farting around in it, as they would be losing money in the process.

Just my 2 cents.

Default knock link assay

I'm pretty sure that my STI (bought 08-03) is pinging a bit on 92 octane. But, i've since installed an exhaust that makes it harder to hear specific engine noise.

I plan to install my knock link ASAP so that i can discriminate real det from imagination.

I'll report the findings here.

Question Any hard info.....?

I have read the thread and I have been to a couple of Subaru dealers testing the waters for a new STi to be purchased by me in the next 10 months or so. Neither one of the claimed to know anything about a "pinging" or "det" problem. Both the sales guys or the tech guys.

Anyone ever see anything "official" put out but SOA?

Thanks for your time.

Yes, it's official. The STi ping reflash is now on the dealer/internal Subarunet ECM Reprogramming info spreadsheet.

So I guess Subaru failed in their bid to get gas companies to put 96 octane gaz at the pumps...which leads to opportunity for us. Hence, I was just about to have my 7 year year old son start putting up a few Toluene stands at a few Chevron stations...

...so now subaru service departments are informed. I am getting mine in today for the reflash.

My son now has to deny the reflash's effectiveness...else I'll have to bring all the Toluene back to the paint shop.

After almost 10k miles, we dropped our STi off yesterday for the re-flash. We have been waiting on ECUTEK but no luck yet. I will post how it turns out.

Update - KONKILR took my STI to his shop today for its 6K oil change etc. He was also finally able to obtain the proper cartridge for the scantool, so the necessary info has been pulled from my ECU. It will be removed from the car this weekend and sent back early next week for the reflash. Then on to the dyno again...

Finally it's gonna be my turn.

Car is going in on Thursday for a new Window Regulator, and check for Detonation.

i used to think i get pings bad.. but i am having second thoughts.

cuz the fluttering sound starts at 3 K RPM. when i push hard.. ( not even sure if it's WOT) in 4-6K RPM i don't get that sound at all.

really weird.. i hope the tech at Irvine will keep me from going insane. everyone tells me i am paranoid.
