Default No spark in new engine!! PLEASE HELP!

My friend and I just swapped a 2.2 l into a 95 1.8. The engine is running on the 1.8 ecu. It has 2.2l block and heads with a 1.8l intake manifold. We are at our ends. The engine turns over and sounds like it wants to start. We have checked fuses and the timing belt and battery. When we try to start it we do smell a rich gas smell. Any help woould be appreciated and needed. Thanks.

James

Is the ignition coil on the 1.8L working and plugged in? Have you pulled a plug after cranking to ensure that it is indeed getting fuel? Was the 2.2 verified as working before you swapped it in? Any CELs?

Yes the coil is working. The plugs smell of strong gas after we try to start it and the engine ran very well before he pulled it from his moms legacy.

Try swapping a 2.2 ecu in?

Check all your connections.

are you getting spark at the plugs?

Check and make sure you plugged in the Crank and Cam Sensors?

A CEL would almost certainly tell you what's going on. Unless, of course, you didn't hook it up

we tried all of them and we still cannot get it started. Will the 1.8 ecu work on the 2.2. We checked the ignitor box and the coil and we still have no spark.

GROUNDS! GROUNDS! GROUNDS!

Check your grounds! Especially since you swapped the manifold. There is a very important ground connection at the manifold by cylinder #4. Its tucked between the fuel injector and breather hose fitting in the valve cover. I recently completed a swap and had the exact same problem and symptoms... engine ran before, strong gas smell after cranking... I thought I checked and tightened everything but this one slipped by me. I even bought a new ECU thinking it was the problem but it wasnt. I guarantee thats what the problem is. Hope this helps.
