Thumbs down Megan Racing Gauges

I purchased 3 Megan gauges off of eBay the other day. Wow, 35 bucks a piece! What a deal right? No.

First off, I'll say the gauges looks real nice. That said, I hope you do most of your driving at night because that's the only time you'll ever be able to read them.

The tint is IMPOSSIBLY dark, making the dials barely legible. Besides that, you'd better hope the sun isn't out because the glare factor on these things make them COMPLETELY unreadable. The guy who QA'd the things must have had XRay vision.

So, I call up Megan Racing for a suggestion. The gauges come with two wires for lighting. One is for daytime driving (ACC wire, brightest) and one is for nighttime driving (wires to the lights switch, dims them when you turn your lights on). The tech suggested I connect the ACC wire to the Lights wire. This makes them even brighter ALL THE TIME. This helped a *little* during the day but they were still completely illegible when glare hit them. And at night they outshone everything else in the car, looking quite ridiculous.

Also, the Oil Temp gauge comes with a sender unit, but no wire. And the gauge has only one wire to connect the sender to. The two other gauges I've worked with both had two. And they have the most worthless instructions. The Turbo gauge comes with cheap nylon hose and for some bizarre reason is 53mm instead of the standard 52mm. The voltmeter was fine, but that's kind of hard to mess up anyway.

It's a good thing they were so inexpensive because I resold them on back on eBay and purchased Autometer Cobalts. I'm much happier with the quality (Megan gauges feel cheap) and they look much nicer to boot.

\\Greg

Note: I'm not dissin' your Megan gauge installation, this was just my experience and personal preferences. If they work for you, you will have saved a bundle.

I'm guessing you picked up the smoked ones.. Photos Below.. The reason I say this is cause my friend got the normal ones and I gotta admit they were pretty nice. Nice looking guage and not ricer. He said they were easy to hook up but then again he's a wise with that stuff so I doubt he ever bothered with the instructions.

The tech said they were releasing a version with less tint, but he wouldn't say when they would be available.

As far as instructions. For the Oil Temp gauge, maybe something was missing from the install kit, but I couldn't figure out how to connect the gauge to the sender.

I would really prefer a no tint version.

I have the boost gauge installed and I love it. It is not dark whatsoever, but I have the gauge installed in one of those autometer instrument panel gaugepods. It might be a bit dark if you have it installed in the clock area since it recieves so much sunlight up there. Yes it comes with a crappy tubes, but that can be upgraded for cheap. (I am using the cheap one and it is working fine)

I recently got the oil pressure and it didnt come with the line, kind of ****ty.

I feel for the price though, these are awesome looking gauges and I would do it again.

I agree daytime visibilty is terrible, but at night, its tough to beat them.. especially for a legacy, they match the stock gauges perfectly. cant beat $60 for a boost and a/f meter that matches your factory gauges.
