Default turbo mod's?

I was thinking about what kinda mod's can be made to a turbo. All I really know so far is taking of the exauhst side and having it ceramic coated. is there anything else? what about having the air inlet smoothed out? it's kinda got some ridges on it. Can I have the compressor housing honed? or would that be a waste? also if there are some things to be done to it, could I take most of it apart myself?? Or should I leave it to a pro? Like could I take it apart to have it ceramic coated? Thanks in advance.

you can have both sides ported, polished, honed whatever. you can have the blades clipped for faster spool but less top end. what kind of turbo do you have...cuz it would be pointless to do all this to a wrx turbo while using it on a 2.5 cuz all the money spent on a small turbo would be money well spent on a larger turbo which will be faster in the long run.

Most common mods are porting and clipping. Clipping will increase power up top do to lower back pressure, but slow spool up slightly (less turbine to turn). (opposite of what smacksube said) Clipping is good for drag turbos or big power. Not recommended for autox. Obviously porting will just give better flow.

Lastly, if you have an internal wastegate you can get a larger flapper to help control over boosting.

You can easily take the turbine housing off. In fact you have to if you clock the turbo. But unless you know how to port I'd pay and get it done by a pro. Shouldn't cost you too much. There is a guy around where I live that will port and clip DSM turbo's for maybe 120-150. As for taking apart the rest of the turbo...I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a way to balance it.
