Default Gas gauge problems

My dad has a 2000 Legacy and lately the gas gauge has been acting up. The fill up light comes on and stays on for a while and then goes off when there is over 1/2 tank of gas. Then today the gas needle goes from half to below E to 1/4 to 1/8 to 1/4...etc.

I was curious if this was a sensor issue or electrical issue. Since they are both doing it it would seem to be to be electrical since I think the light and gauge use different sensors.

Any help would be great

Unhappy How much is in my tank???

it can be due to temp changes or pressurization of the tank, for the flux for 1/8 to 1/4. but the warning light lighting up with above 1/2 a tank is not a good sign , it could be as simple as a loose connection but you are right it's definately electrical.

Default Have it checked by the dealer

Had a my95 impreza that had a fuel gauge problem once. Didn't light up the "empty" warning light, but the reading was inconsistent. Dealer checked it and iirc, the fuel gauge sender unit had to be replaced. If you have the factory service manual, perhaps you can at least check whether the sensor gets the right amount of input signal, perhaps the wiring has deteriorated, or there is some temporary loss of contact somewhere.

It has been pretty hot lately...more than normal so that could explain some of it. Unfortunatelly he just went out of warranty about two months ago
