Default Anyone else burn a quart of oil in the first 3000 miles?

I'm at 2100 and over the past 1000 miles I've been slowly burning oil. Yesterday I took a 3 hour highway trip and used about a 1/4 quart. When I checked the oil later that night I was down overall about 1 quart. I did the proper breakin under 1000 miles (under 4K for the first 500, from 500 - 700 went over 4K about 3 - 4 times and from 700 - 1000 went over 4K about 6 - 8 times) and since 1000 miles I've been driving the car hard once in a while, but I certainly haven't been abusing it. Anyone else have a similar experience?

On a side note, this way my first extended highway trip with the STi, I can't believe how stable this car is on the highway. I went 80 the whole way and averaged about 25 mpg! This is good, because previously around town with short highway trips I was getting 20mpg, which I feel is still good BTW!

I burn't 1.5 qtrs in a day at the track. As for normal cruising I don't think mine is burning much oil.

Did you change your oil or is this the factory oil?

yeah. mine burnt about 1quart since the 1000 mile mark and I now have 2200. Almost every car burns oil in the First 5000 miles. so i hope its just normal.

Did you all put a fresh crush washer on when you replaced the drain plug? I read in another thread that this was the cause of another's "burning oil" issue. Just a thought...

The crush washer doesn't have anything to do with burning oil, it stops oil leaking out of the drain plug, if it leaks then you need to change if it doesn't leak then its not the cause of missing oil.

I meant Zoso, did you change your oil prior to this?

Chock me up for burning about 3/4 qt in about 1000 miles. When I checked the
dipstick I about freaked! I changed the oil at about 800 mi w/ 10W30 Castrol GTX &
had planned to change to Mobil 1 @ about
3000 mi, but after seeing this kinda oil
consumption I think I'm gonna wait.

Heck, my 94 RX-7 which actually injects oil
into the rotor housings doesn't use this much oil!

I haven't changed the oil since I got the car. I was going to do it at 1000 miles, but the oil looked so clean I figured I'd wait until 3000. I think I actually burned closer to only 1/2 quart. The dipstick on this car is really hard to read, because it seems to scrape a lot when you take it out and it streaks the oil up the side of the stick which makes it hard for me to get acurate readings. I checked it this morning and now it's reading close to the notch above the F. I guess I overfilled about 1/2 quart. I'm going to check it again later, I drove it pretty hard today so I'll be interested to see if it went down any.

So are we expecting this car to normally burn oil when it's pushed hard?

Default Change my oil at 3000

According to the dipstick, it used barely anything.
I switched to synthetic and put my TurboXS exhaust on.
Big improvement!

At 13 miles (pickup) the stick read just a hair past the max line. At 1200 it was still right there near the max line before the oil change. Check it right after the oil change and it was just north or the max line. At just a little over the 2000 mile mark still right there. The gas milage on the other hand has been horrible, but that's probably just my right foot. I did about 8 miles to the gallon on a 30 mile stretch of twisties out in BFE. I'm averaging about 21-22 mpg everyday. No track days or auto-x yet, so I don't really know what it will do in terms of oil consumption under extreme conditions. I had a relatively easy breakin. 0-200 < 4k rmp, 200-600 < 5000 rpm, 600-1000 < 5500 rmp. Right after the 1K mark I drove it hard for at least a few days. Hard was not really that hard. My shift light lights up at 6200 and I'm moving onto the next gear by 6500. This is usually what I'm doing when I'm having fun in the twisties. I have bounced it a few of time due to inattention to the light. How did you guys break in? What are your driving habits? I have not heard the dreaded pinging. Do/Did your cars ping? This is the kind of stuff that scares me. I hope I don't see this in my STi.

I was in error....my car only appears to have been down 1/2 quart not a full quart like I previously thought. I've been reading oil dipsticks for 15 years, but this one is a little tricky. My car hasn't pinged at all so far *knock on wood*

I changed my oil after the 1000 mile break-in. I am not burning any oil so far. I have been to the track (drag strip) once and so far so good. So far my STI has had no pinging or oil consumption problems. I probably just jinxed myself.
