Default worst ways to begin shopping experience

let's see...i'm sitting here at my job where i sling wireless phones and service at the good people of my town. here are some of the worst possible ways to begin a conversation with a salesperson. hopefully some of you can add your worst retail shopping experiences:

1) i step into the back room for 1.5 seconds to inhale a bite of what is now ice-cold pizza crust. a man enters and doesn't see a salesperson standing directly in front of the door, so he begins to yell rather loudly, "hellLLLOOO?!?!?....heLLLOOOOO!?!?!" sounding somewhat like a dying manatee, while kicking the desk to make as much noise as possible.
he needs help programming numbers into the phone he bought at the competitor's store down the street i guess he was never taught the art of READING, cuz ya know, it talks about that stuff in the instruction book. i ask him, "were they not able to help you in programming your phone at the store you bought it from sir?" to which he replies, "well, you're more convenient" hmm...

2) a woman enters and immediately slams her phone onto my desk and yells, "i want a new g*ddamm phone RIGHT now... i've had it with you people! "
hmm...
i tell the boss (who's on the other end of the phone) that i probably should call him back in a minute. i mean really, who would do this to someone on the phone? is that really the best way she could think of to start the conversation? she didn't even buy it here. she lives in florida and is on vacation.

3) my least favorite conversation is the one that begins with, "i'm not buying anything today or anytime soon, but i'd like to know everything there is to know about wireless technology..."
ughhh...holy cottonmouth. tell me again why i wanna talk to you?
these people are usually immigrants with no credit who are killing time while waiting for the bus at the stop in front of my store.
tirekickers...

ok, so this is part rant. but i wanted to share the joys of retail with those who don't know, and those who may sympathize.

discuss...

Dont work at blockbuster where people come in wearing Armani Suits, Rolex's, with Mercedes/BMW/Jag etc. keys and compain about 4 dollar late fees becuase they thought the movies were due at midnight, and claim the person that helped told them that when it hasnt been that way for over several (like 4-5) years.

That is such crap man. I just started renting from Blockbuster again, who I hadn't rented from since high school. The first time I rented something, they were all late because I brought them back after noon.

Tell me why I'm paying more only to get up early Sunday to return some damn movies.

Exactly why I don't rent at Blockbuster anymore. That happened to me and I haven't been back since. Hollywood lets them go till midnight. Much more convenient.

I rent movies at Albertson's or Wal-Mart. Same movies, same quality, half the price. New rentals at Albertson's are 1.99 and older flicks are 99 cents. Why do I want to pay more to have it for 3 days? When I rent a movie I'm watching the dang thing that night.

Because you will be learning skills that will teach you to deal with "leads" when you get into a higher $$ market as a salesman.

Every customer has the possibility to bring you business. Even if they are not buying anything now, your attitude will determine if they come back to you or go to another vendor.

I was in the top 1% (40 out of 40,000) of sales for Sprint for 2 years straight. <shameless tooting of one's horn>

If you where a good sales person you would see this as a challenge. You should see this as possible sale. If they didnít buy from you then and explained it clear enough to them they will return to you when they are ready to buy. If you did a great job of explaining it they might purchase a phone with service though they went there just to get information.

Welcome to sales!!!! I just explained CUSTOMER SERVICE to you!

sorry. as i agree with your response fully, i forgot to add something to my original post...these people are usually immigrants with no credit who are killing time while waiting for the bus at the stop in front of my store.

The same rental at BBV is due noon the day after it would be due at midnight at Hollywood. BBV just gives you an extra day.

Return it saturday night. Just so you know there is a 2 hour grace period for the employees to get everything checked in. If you take you video inside and politely ask someone who works there to check it in for you they will gladly do it and no late fees. Even if you are late by a couple of hours, just go inside and explain yourself and most of the time they wont charge you. You knew when it was due and you couldnt make it back on time, its your fault not BBV's.

First off, I'm not heading out a 11:00 at night to return a movie after I finish watching.

Second, we actually did get our late charges wiped, because it was our first rental and they were nice about it.

But now I know to start looking for another place.

But I usually watching the last night I have it....not the same night I rent it, which still leaves me driving to Blockbuster in the middle of the night.

see man, i call 'user-error'. that's poor planning. don't get upset at the company, or their policies, if you can't watch your movies the night you rent them. you know they'll be due back by a certain date, so figure it out! ahhhhhhhh...i feel much better now. thanks

My number is up!! Please give me some sales tips.

You sell cell phones to the public from the corner shop and I sell semiconductors for a billion dollar company to electrical engineers. This should be interesting.

Ok, I'll agree your first 2 examples are just rude. I don't know where people get the idea that it's okay to treat people like crap just because they happen to be behind a counter. It seems to be a pretty universal thing though. Hell, one of my other hobbies is swords, so I read forums that have people who work at knive/cutlery stores posting... you won't believe the number of idiots that walk into a store full of potentially deadly WEAPONS and act like completely ignorant asses. I've heard stories where someone asked to look at a knife, then tries to hold up the store with it. Uh... DUH?

I have to take exceptio to this though; sure casual browsers are annoying, but when I go to buy something I know what I want, so I'll usually just say that, or something similar in an effort to abort the dumb sales pitch that I know I don't want to hear. The salesman trying to convince me that I "really need" the plan 3 levels higher than what I want really pisses me off, and hey, it's only an extra $80 a month... yipee Like I'm supposed to think you're trying to do me a favor? The ability to dupe some schmoe with more money than brains into spending twice as much money as he really needs to is not something I find terribly impressive, sorry.

That's why I think the whole commission thing sucks, because the salesman (person) who actually tries to make sure someone buys what they need, not less, but not more either, loses out in the end to the asshat who's just out to rip each customer off as much as possible. (not aimed at anyone in this thread, just venting at the system in general)

i'm not on a system that gives a higher commission for a higher plan (although i wish i was now that i think about it).

i believe in good ol' fashioned karma, and never try to get people in over their heads.

Yeah, I'm just kinda sore at the whole thing right now because a co-worker of mine just got a cell phone, partially based on my recommendation. I wasn't there when she got it, but apparently the guy tried to royally rip her off, and as is he convinced her to buy a bunch of accessories she didn't need. I mean, in the end it's her fault for not sticking to her convictions, but they guy definitely took advantage of the fact that she didn't know a whole lot about cell phones to make her think she needed the extras, not just that they might be convenient in certain circumstances.
