Post Who has swapped to an EJ20 Turbo or Twin Turbo?

I am considering an engine swap from the EJ25 DOHC that is my Legacy now to an EJ20 Twin Turbo from a Japanese spec B4. I assume this is the same engine core as the jap spec WRX. I would like to extensively talk to a few people who have done the engine swap about a few things. Please contact me at bcalger@usa.net or post or pm your contact information.

Thanks
Brad

It's a really big pain in the a$$ to do this swap... unless you're going to swap over everything (ie drivetrain/ECU/engine etc)... as well, you'll loose your low end torque. Might as well get a turbo bolted onto your EJ25.

Physically though everything should fit if you run with a EJ20 w/ 1-turbo.

Does anyone know a list of people who have done the swap? My main concern is having everything match up. Also about how the car runs on 92 octane fuel. Also if I would need to change anything out exhaust wise to make it emissions legal. Or actually what I can get away with removing and still have it emmissions legal.

Let me know who has done this.

Thanks
Brad

the reason that no one has done this is that the twin turbo headder won't fit with the left hand drive steering colum

If you go with an EJ20 swap, the two biggest areas of concern are getting a LHD wiring harness and a replacement fron member to accomodate the down pipe/turbo/header stuff.
And as already mentioned getting a tranny at the same time. Not many people have done it themselves. Rallispec on the East, and ISR on the west are both shops that do this kind of work if you are willing to pay someone.
Not many shade tree experts lurking around on this one, but wait a few months-year and there will be a number of us pulling EJ20's out of US WRX's and hacking through this together.

Thanks Ver.III,

Nice car. It looks like your project turned out really nice. Where on earth did you find an STI engine and turbo? If I really get serious about trying to do this within the next couple years I will definitely need your insight.

Thanks
Brad

MY99,
Locating these motors is fairly simple as there are a number of folks importing these engines from wrecked cars in Japan. As Cacophony mentioned in another thread, you can get brand new motors in the crate shipped over, meaning you get a working engine.

Unhappy

Sorry to bring some bad news, but the B4 missed out on the closed deck block, forged pistons and a couple of other niceties (smaller intercooler, too).

Caution: It - the TT - is NOT as durable as the STi engine (which is why the B4 is cheaper than the STi).

Also, as noted somewhere else, the TT is not a good one for LHD due to plumbing issues - the single turbo STi engine/set up seems to be the way to go - but don't be afraid to be the classleader!

Cheers

Thanks for the advice AnotherB4 but classleaders in this scenario have a lot of money to begin with or end up very broke when there done leading. I'll go with whats safe.

I like the idea of the STI engine. Can you show me a place that I could buy that engine "new in the crate"? Which version is the best STI EJ20 to have? Ive heard good things about the Ver3. WHat do you guys think?

Thanks
Brad

For the $7k you'll spend to get a new, stock STi motor here, you could just build up your EJ25 and have money left over. I really don't see a point to doing an engine swap for anything but those obsessed with either being different for its own sake or authenticity.

If 350 crank hp on stock internals from an EJ25 just isn't enough, I guess an engine swap is in order (not that you can't build an EJ25 with forged internals and reworked valvetrain and go for over 400hp...)

Bsquare,

350 crank horsepower would be great on an EJ25 with stock internals. Ive just never heard of anyone accomplishing this and having some hope of reliability. I would much rather build up my EJ25 but I know it wasn't built for the excessive heat and stress of 250+ horsepower. When there is significant evidence that maybe it was built with the capability of 350 horsepower at the crank w\ stock internals and still be a reliable everyday driver, then I would concentrate my efforts on building up my EJ25.

I guess thats a challenge. For those of you out there that stands behind this idea that an EJ25 can be built up to produce 350 crank horsepower and still be a reliable everyday driver Please Chime In Now.

I want to know Everything that I would need to do to acheive this. A list of aftermarket products. I want to beleive this can be done. I don't have a lot of tuning experience so I want solid facts that I can understand. It would help if you could put me in touch with people who have done it.

Let me know. I guess I am looking for someone to take me under their wing and show me how its done.

Thanks
Brad

ok.. looks like wiring is a biggest problem when swapping an EJ20, but will TECII solve this problem?

I'm wondering the same thing as above. If you buy an aftermarket ECU does that take away the frustration of trying to splice the japanese one to the American one?

Thanks
