Is there such a beast where the average Joe can buy and operate to find out what the hell is wrong or why it came on? Instead of going to the dealership each time!

i got my OBD II reader from advanced auto back in march or so when i had a MAF sensor die. It was $150.00 and i think it was worth. I always keep in the car so in case i ever get a code.
