Have a Nice Day? Need More Power! Just got smoked by S2000

Okay. Did a run against an S2000 2nd through 3rd gears. Both cars were stock apart from my BOV and removed resonator box (as far as I know but he was an older guy and had stock exhaust and everything else that I could see). 2nd gear we were dead even. 3rd gear however, he pulled on me noticably. I need more power ASAP. He gave me the thumbs up and I did the same. I would have thought he would have pulled a but more on me but then again I'm not sure how good a driver he was. As I've said many times. The WRX is quick but fast it is not (yet).

With big lungs you may have taken that particular S2000. High pressure in front, low pressure in back, a'la turbo back, up pipe and a little more 'force' to your induction... game over man! game over...
This car is tunable for outright power, I'm wondering what to do about the gearing/torch lethargy! On tight turnees this car is hating life, its gearing limbo when neither 1st nor 2nd consummates navigating the tight stuff...

There where some puns in there some where!?

Hmmm....new ECU, that removes the MAF, ditch the BOV. Go to a faster spooling turbo. Straight pipe, with an even length header, no cats.

That should give you more then enough power.

Well my Kakimoto exhaust should be here soon. I am working on the downpipe and hopefully I can get this SBC-ID group buy to fly. Next maybe an IHI turbo upgrade and some tuning.

Perhaps this turbo is what you really need
http://www.autospeed.com/autospeedbb...ML/003187.html

The IHI PE1820 Power Turbine is rated 450-ps and it is one of Japan's best kept secret. We runs a few of them in Brunei and it kicks ass! Very little lag when compared to VF series turbos with fantastic spooling and midrange to highend torque.

It's mine and it's for sale !!

God,
are you sure he went to third gear? S2000's have high rev limits. maybe the time it took you to shift and get on the gas was the time he saved by not doing the same.

Could this be the "new and improved" IHI unit CObb Tuning is selling? That thing is a monster.

The S2000 is a fantastic sports car. A friend who has one (and has ordered a WRX wagon) traded cars with me for a little drive. It's quite a bit less powerful until you hit 6000 RPM, then it GOES. And it's handling is razor sharp. There's really no comparison with our WRX.

And there shouldn't be. It's lighter, lower, much more tightly sprung - which are positives for performance driving. But it's also 5-10K more money, seats only two, has no room for luggage, rides really rough and is pretty impractical. Wanna go to the autocross, the S2000 wins. The ralleycross, the WRX wins. Take a day trip on a nice 70 degree day to a local spot, or a quick country outing, the convertible. Take a long trip on the highways - the WRX is what you need.

Yeah, we can MAYBE compete with the S2000 in terms of acceleration. Handling, no way. But the S2000 can't even begin to compete in terms of ride quality, comfort, visibility (with the top up) or ability to carry some cargo. You get the tool you want for the task you need to do, and the one you can afford. The S2000 is a discount Porsche, the WRX is a discount Audi S4. Both are great cars, but designed for different tasks.

The answer: Don't race the S2K from a roll, race it off the line.

The 5.0 guys are sometimes funny about this when lining up against DSM AWDs... they'll just roll nice and easy from the light (making you think they don't want to play), and then at around 10 mph they'll jump on it, therefore completely negating any launch advantage you'd have.

Anyway, take it to the track, they can't play any tricks like that there (and it's safer )

I usually do take it to the track only but it was late and no one was around so we went at it. I know with a launch I could maybe get him off the line but bottom line the S2000 bone stock will kill us in the long run.

Actually looking at the quarter mile times, the S2000 should win easily. They are a 13 second car. WRX is mid 14 second car with good launch. I didn't expect to keep up. Just wanted to get a point of reference. My car is running very well. Blitz BOV sounds great, Cusco rear sway bar cured much of the understeer (although front LSD still needed) and I'm really enjoying the car. I'm looking into doing the group buy for the SBC soon si I can get myself one as well.

Outright power (high boost, bigger turbo) is going to do much if you have the wrong gear ratios. My '98 Japan spec WRX wagon has close ratio gears as standard with 4.111 final drive .. absolutely useless against DOHC Honda VTECs. The ratios are designed for very quick off the mark in gears 1,2,3. Being Jap spec, the speedo has a 180 kph limiter and i reach there in 4th gear @ 7000 rpm.

According to Road and Track the S2000 runs 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. R&T had the WRX at 5.7 (1000 ft altitude). Another Mag had the WRX at 5.4. I'm assuming cool sea level.

Last week I took the WRX to the track. A buddy of mine drove my WRX. I lined up against him in my SVX turbo. The first time he beat me. The second time I beat him. His best time was 15.7???? What's up with that??? I thought this car was supposed to run the 1/4 in low 14's according to the road tests. Did suby cheat? I thought of the driver thing but my buddy used to race porsches. I have a 5sp sedan BTW.

Anyone else been to the track stock?

cdigerlando - a bone stock WRX ran a best time of 14.409 at Englishtown, NJ this past weekend. It took him several runs to nail his launch, but he did it. Meanwhile, another stock WRX ran low to mid 15's all day long. 1/4 mile ETs are very launch dependant and thus very driver dependant.

You could upgrade your compressor with the boost controller.

TARMAC's WRX with IHI ballbearing turbo at only 15.6 psi has stunning acceleration now. I think that is a VF22, not sure. However, it is much faster than Diz's WRX with stock turbo and 15 psi of boost.

Hi B16power. Nice to see you here. Just trying my best to take a crash course on EJ20 basics. I love my WRX, much more fun than my ITR even if slower and handles like a land yacht in comparison.

I seem to remember that the old WRX's were neck and neck with the s2000 and the Porsche Boxster. I would think that this 227hp car would be able to take them. Maybe, you need to break the car in a little more to get the full power?
