special tool nocks them out but I never used it. Just use those little octagon things. Get a size that will fit in there and hit the edge of pin and knock it out with hammer. They are big pain in ass and I hate them.Good luck. They can come out either direction and are like a big mouth (teeth) that spreads open when inside axle.

Just use an appropriately sized flat-head screwdriver, and stick it into the side that doesn't have a little countersunk hole around the pin. Tap it nice and hard with a mallet a couple of times, and it'll start to move, and pop right out. You might want to try spraying on some PB Blaster or similar penetrating lubricant to help get it out.

A punch works as well.

yeah, i used a punch to do mine. it works really well when you put the pin back in if you have the right size punch, cause the pin will sit right on the tip of it. if your pins crack or anything, make sure you replace them. broken axle pins are no fun. and just like Andrew said, hit the pin out of the sunken hole and back in the way too. make sure your the teeth on the axle are lined up right when you put it back on too. if they dont line up, rotate the axle 180 degrees. hope that helps.

The FSM reccomends using new spring pins whenever you do axles, and I'm inclined to agree... they're like $0.97, and pretty fundamental to any drivetrain work.

A punch works very well, and you don't need to buy new pins because you don't screw them up like you can with a screwdriver.

Regardless, the FSM states to use fresh spring pins, whether you use the ST, a punch, or a screwdriver.

Buy the pins and then tear into it. If they don't get damaged, don't replace them. They WILL get damaged if you don't have extras though; guaranteed.
