Fog light replacements
I'm looking for a stock fitting, high powered driving light to replace my '02 WRX fogs. I have had no desire to ever turn them on in over 2 years since I went to HID, but for highway use in the sticks (read: I'm the only car for miles) it be nice to have a LOOOONG distance option to really see up ahead.
HID prefered, but I'd like you guys to show me the writting on the wall and give me your opinions. Jorge (RiftsWRX) www.ProjectWRX.com

HID's in the stock location are going to be hard to find....most HID's are 7"+ lights.
You could get some Hella 500 in the driving beam, or Cibie Oscars, or PIAA XT80's. If you never turn on the foglights, you could definately aim the driving lights up as to blind any oncoming drivers (but give you the light you probably want. Only other option is to get a lightbar. |

If you're willing to spend the bucks
Check out the prodrive Hella FF1000 Xenon kit. Ridiculous lighting from an HID lamp that fits into the stock position. I had them and sold them because they were too bright.
Expensive. Sold them to another member of the board...can't remember who off the top of my head so maybe they'll pop up and reply. Michael |

Biggest problem (and maybe you can answer this, Jorge) is with the power to drive the lamps. Our alternators are so weak - I'm really looking for a good 90-100amp alternator (as opposed to our 75). That's where HIDs would help. More than twice the light output of halogens for less than half the power. Arc lighting is so cool. -Andrew |

you could just get an HID kit for H3's...then pop open the stock fogs and remove the reflector in the middle....that would be some SERIOUS light..

Check out the HID fog lights www.rallyperformance.com have. They sound like what you are looking for.
Think there are two options: Hella HID for WRX $1198 Cibie Oscar $299 (not HID) http://www.rallyperformance.com/lights.shtml -anders |

So are there any brighter aftermarket foglights out there that's pretty much just plug and play? A simple remove of the oldies and install with the new?
Did you say the Hella FF's need a bracket from kartboy to fit? Also would you just recommend adding HID H3's with the reflector still on? Or would that be a waste of money without removing the reflector? |

Don't think there are any plug'n play units out there, but if you make some brackets similar to what Kartboy makes then most lights will fit as long as the diameter is correct.

I just read in a magazine today that hella came out with a bracket that will allow the FF1000 foglights to fit in the WRX.
They didn't have a price on the brackets but are they pretty much similar to the kartboy ones? And how much are they? |

Nothing plug and play will work; even regular 500s are best wired to the battery and the relay hooked to the fog switch. For distance lights, though, the stock foglight location isn't very good. It's too close to the road and you'll have a lot of glare.
If you want to save on what Subaru would charge for a fog light, you can always get Hella 500s like Nick and I have. |
