a/f gauge install
So i tried installing an autometer Air/fuel gauge the other day and it wouldn't work... If i spliced into the wrong wire on the ecu, should it still light? I'm getting no power.. I tried splicing into the radio and my turbo timer but still didn't get any power. I then spliced into my boost gauge and that didn't work? Any ideas? I've grounded it to a metal piece underneath the a-pillar.. I've also tried splicing into the boost gauge's ground..

i would tap power and ground into the turbo timer, and the signal wire into the correct wire on teh ECU.
i put the same gauge on my RS and it worked fine, but had similar problems at first, not realizing that it doesnt light up untill the engine is running.(not normally lit like most gauges are) today i saw a friend of mines WRX with an A/F guage..it didnt light up at all at idle, he siad you have to be moving for it to work, not hot enough for hte O2 sensor to produce the propber voltage i guess...which i thought was weird becuase arent they heated? also, did you tap into the rear sensor.. i know on RS's, the front sensor isnt a 0-1v. scale.. so i had to use the rear O2 sensor..which gives a reading of my exhaust after my cat. either way, when im on the throttle more than 5%, i run very rich. i need an S-AFC or ECU reprogram Murray |

on a 02, it should be the b17 pin wire. becareful as the o2 sensors only send out about 1v. if you accidentally send 12v, you might break the meter.
your a/f should light up even if it is idle. it will only go out when you let off your gas to coast to a stop. once stopped, it should light up. i get a rich indication when warm, lean indication when its not heated up enough. |

Hmmm... this is pretty interesting stuff... I'm sure I tapped into the b17 meter.. Even so, it should light up. I tried revving and such.. but not driving.. hrmm... I'll give a stab at it tomorrow though.. Thanks for the replies!

Just FYI...
At the ECU, pin B17 (white) is the rear and D19 (white) is the front sensor, according to the 2003 wiring manual. If you want to test the output of the front sensor without going all the way to the ECU, (to see if it has the proper output) it is available under the solenoid cover under the hood at Pin 4 (white) of connector B18 (the one on top, the easiest to get to) for the front sensor. Also, the third connector down at this junction is connector B279 which is from the uppipe EGT sensor, pin 1 (white/black) from this connector goes to pin B16 at the ECU if you want to connect an EGT gauge. All this info is on page 75, but on page 86 it shows that the front O2 sensor goes to pin C22 (white) at the ECU, and the rear O2 goes to pin A14 (white) at the ECU. This might explain the wiring change for 2003. |

I don't really know about this stuff very well but you guys are taping the a/f wire to the ECU so you don't have to run it through the firewall right? Because it should also work just fine if you tap it directly at the O2 sensor right?

These gauges tap into the rear 02 sensor and not the front. The front sensor, which is the one that actually provides the A/F information to the ECU, is a wideband unit and does not produce the same type of output as a conventional narrowband sensor so it cannot be read by the gauge. As a result the only way to get readings is to use the rear 02 which is a standard narrowband 0-1V sensor. However this is a compromise since the rear sensor is located far back in the exhaust stream and also is behind the uppipe and downpipe cats (assuming you still have them). The rear 02 is not intended to provide useful A/F data, it is only there to monitor the catalyst efficiency. So, you don't get accurate A/F readings with the Autometer gauge.
The only way to get a truly accurate A/F readout is with a gauge that uses its own dedicated wideband 02 sensor. |

yah, this autometer is only good for cruising speeds to see if you are running too high of a gear or not for watever grade (hill or flat) you're running. its response is too slow too for tuning.

funny, I just installed the A/F this weekend.. the reason why it's bad for tuning is that it's using the rear O2 sensor (feedback sensor).. I dont think it's a bad A/F (you would need a wideband 02 for that). I was curious to which signal wire to wire it up.. but after looking over RAVENSBLADE wiring schematics, it's pretty clear to tap it to the rear O2 sensor wire (since it reads 0.0 to 0.9 volts).
As for power, I tapped the lines from the ECU (ignition power supply and ingition ground and ran a 1 amp inline fuse). Some times the lights on the A/F gauge doesnt show up (because it's zero volts or LEAN). Thats normal since I have an autometer boost gauge that shows vacuum readouts when I am off the throttle (which is normal and correct). With the A/F, it's only needed to see how RICH you are running the car when the car is on load (just to make sure the car is pumping in the fuel. I would just use it for safety measures. An EGT would be more beneficial though. Keefe |

you have to tap your purple wire (a/f signal) to B17 on the ECU. even if this isn't tapped, the light should still light up and remain in RICH as long as you have the gauge wired for power and ground.
once you tap the a/f signal....your gauge should fluctuate on stop-go-idle...etc. enjoy your new graphic equalizer. jason |

I have a carious question for all the people who have the Autometer A/F gauge. Does your gauge seem to have a delayed response? When i get on the gas and let off the meter doesn't respond until like a couple of seconds later. Does your's do that? I just installed this today so i maybe drove with it for about ten minutes with it. I'm pretty sure I taped the signal through B-17 (white wire). Does it have anything to do with my ground? I am sharring the same grounding point as the bulb on the boost gauge.

yep, the response is about 1sec late. this is another reason why u can't use this guage to tune.

I just got the a/f guage today. From what I hear, there is really no point to it. So should i return it, and get a different one?? I really need to know by thurs, since thats when i go to pick up my other guage, and the pod. Also I have a 2000 2.5rs, would it work fine on that car?? All that stuff sounds really complicated. What shouldi do?!!?!? HELP!!!

its a nice gauge to have if you wanna know how your running at cruise.. i only got mine cause i did a motor swap, and im running off the wrong ECU!
i also have an oil PSi guage..thats an important one to keep an eye on. installing the A/F on an RS is easy, it just taps power and ground, then 1 wire to your ECU tapped into the rear O2 sensor signal wire. Murray [email protected] |

Thanks. If i were to return the a/f, id get the oil press. My friend and i already talked about how its a good one to have. So do you think it would be fine, since i have the same ecu with the same engine? Cause i really do not wanna go through the return.

imo, its a nice monitor to have especially when going up hills, etc while you're trying to decide if you wanna go in the gear you're in or need to down shift. especially with aftermarket exhaust, etc its hard to tell if you're running too rich/lean at 2700rpm or less
torqueband. other than that, it's not a very useful guage other than when you are at wot and 1 sec late. |

Alright im so confused. Me and my friends installed it today. We tapped the white wire, funny thing is there are 2 white wires!!! We also tapped into the power for my amp, was that a bad thing. Anyways the light always stays at rich, even when the car is off. Please explain to me what i did wrong. Im thinkin we tapped the power from the wrong place, and tapped the wrong wire. Any help would be great, thanks.

your amp is probably getting constant power and it switches
on/off via relay triggered by your headunit's remote wire. you don't want to wire your A/F's power from there, tap it from a switched fuse. i don't know about the RS's ECU, so check around to see which wire is for your rear 02sensor. |
