Default engine knock...hydrolic tensoner or piston slap?

is there any tests i can do to determan which one it could be?or are there any other possable causes?

On a MY98? My guess is that your timing belt tensioner is leaking and causing the knocking. My MY99 just had it replaced and it is way smoother sounding!

ya the sube guy said like 30% chance its the hydro tightner 70% chance of piston slap....i can only notice the knock at startup when its cold

You can test the tensioners. Have you changed your oil lately?

how do u test the tensioner? what sort of load does it have and can u visably see it leaking if i remove timing cover?

Default tensioner

I'd say it's most likely the tensioner. It needs to be removed in order to be tested.

You can possibly use a stethoscope to determine the source of the noise.

Have you been changing your oil often? Thats the most common reason for the HLA to fail.
