you just need to undo the lines into the rack, unbolt it from the crossmember and slide it out of the universal joint it should drop down far enough to move the crossmember out. Before you remove the universal joint make alignment marks on the input shaft and the universal joint so when you put it back in the steering wheel will still be straight. It's also a good time to upgrade those steering bushings too. There might be something I'm forgetting. I'll look at my manuals and see.

I dropped my steering rack, unbolted the "A" arm anti-roll bushing and the screw point in front of it because the x-member would not come off. I slid the xmember out the passenger side wheel well. The steering rack you have to drop down completely to make it easier on yourself to install the xmember. Make sure you don't bent/puncture the CV boot.
Cheers!

Default This might sound like a silly question, but...

If you're going to swap X-members, would'nt that mean you're swapping engines & the crossmember is to allow the headers to clear? That would suggest that you already have a cherry picker to move the motor. (Unless you're really strong) Or the motor is already out.

Yeah, you need something to hold the engine. An engine hoist works, or what I did was just jacked the engine up from infront of the oil pan. Get it up so the studs clear the crossmember and you should be okay.

Wow, I just noticed this was my thread from last July. I did this the first day I started the turbo. Good luck with the swaps!

i'm not doing an engine swap but just changing out the crossmember. i already dropped the steerring rack but i'm havent taken out the crossmember yet. i just wanted to check to see if i needed an engine lift. so a jack would work right in front of the oil pan? or on the oil pan with wood?

are u pulling the motor or what? I took my RS engine out and put the sti in. I pulled engine, un did the universal gold steering connector, then undid the tie rods and control arms and took the whole thing out. Set it on the grass, took the steering out, installed it in the turbo legacy crossmember, bolted it back up. Installed the whole unit back into the car. Then dropped sti in

Yes i would get an engine hoist. I don't particularly like the idea of my motor teetering on a jack by the oil pan.

Don't jack it on the oil pan. You'll see in front of the oil pan, on the engine itself, a great place to jack it up.

you mean you're running turbo headers?

are you replacing a turbo cross member w/ another turbo crossmember?

or an NA X-member w/ a turbo crossmember?

How did you run the turbo headers on the NA style crossmember?

Take the headers off then. If you don't want to, then you can use a engine hoist.
