I bought a 1963 VW beetle in 1971. It was my first boxer motor: 1192cc with 40 horsepower and 6-volt electrics.

<IMG SRC="http://www.businessweek.com/1998/12/art12/bw1271.jpg" border=0>

Stock when I got it; I put on a shortshift kit, headers, Tiger Paw "wide oval" tires (70-series was considered low-profile back then ), custom 8-track cassette stereo. This one had the sweeet full-length fabric sunroof, too. Hated to sell it...

1954 Chevy, paid about $350 for it in 1960 off a used car lot in Bakersfield CA, it stopped running on the way home and my dad helped get it started (forget what was wrong, not much.)I was way impressed that it was only 6 years old:-}

I learned to drive on a '78 Chevy Concourse (think "old Nova"), and could barely see over the dashboard. My parents tried to tell me to "shift into 2nd at 30mph, and 3rd at 40mph." That car had a 350 in it! It was fun in the Chicago snow.

The first car I ever owned was an '84 Honda Civic hatchback. I sold it to a kid I went to highschool with. Those of you in the western suburbs of Chicago may still see it driving around town! I hear it still runs.

I then owned the following, in order:
'84 Toyota Camry (ssslllooowww)
'92 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS (a little faster)
'98 Impreza 2.5 RS (most fun ever!)

Heh... my first car was an '81 'vette. That's Chevette I paid $850 for it in 1990 and drove it into the ground for the next four years. It had a lovely habit of flooding on cold mornings before school. Luckily, we lived at the top of a small hill, so I got really good at kick-starts During my freshman year at college, my dad sold the 'vette to someone for $200. It blew a head gasket a week later, so my dad gave them $100 back and told them to keep it. They abandoned it 3 weeks later without ever having transfered the title

The following summer, it became apparent that I was going to need a car to make the trips back and forth to school. A friend of my mom's gave me a really good deal on an '83 Saab 900 turbo. I loved that car. It had 130K miles when I bought it, but still ran amazingly well. Over my remaining college years, I put another 50K miles on it, and tried to take good care of it. But by that time it was badly in need of some fairly major drivetrain work.

Which brings us to my first Subie, a '99 Outback Sport. My mom had been driving a Legacy wagon for a few years at this point, and when I drove it, I was amazed at how well it handled. So I test drove the OBS and fell in love. Unfortunately, it was totaled in an accident after only 1.5 years It was replaced with a larger 2000 Legacy Outback wagon because I had recently gotten married, and my wife and I wanted something smoother and more comfortable.

Which brings us to last month, when I purchased our 2nd car, my new 2002 2.5 RS. So far, I'm lovin' it... for the first time I'm looking into actually making some performance mods and possibly doing some auto-x
