really weird problem
click me just picked up a new headunit and for some reason or another it stays on after i shut the car off (MY99 RS) however... if i flick the wipers on after i shut the car down the radio shuts down that instant. how can this be? the radio isnt supposed to stay on. and i cant understand how the wipers are affecting it.
thanks in advance, Nate

Do you have the add on guage pack, or the compass pack.
I remember this from a while ago. Some of the RS' had am additional capacitor somewhere, and it actually stores enough power to keep your radio on after the car is off. When you flick the wipers or use another accessory it drains the power and your radio turns off. I cannot remember if there was a solution for this or not. J |

i did not get the guage pack or the compass option. however someone else on the board and an installer i spoke with both recommended that i change the ground wire from the harness to an actual point on the car. im going to try it this weekend and post my results.
thanks, Nate |

Yeah, that sounds familiar. Try that and see if it works. I remember someone also got it to work by installing a drain on the power line.. basically to use the power up faster.. I think they powered their guages off the same power line.. or something like that.
Good luck. J |

changing the ground did nothing, apparently there is a capacitor somewhere in the stock wiring and thats whats keeping the radio on, i need to figure out how to disable this but at the same time i feel like its there for a reason.

you also should check the wiring on your new headunit. If there is a loose wire that is grounded and its not supposed to be, funky stuff happens.
and you may have your power wires switched. As I understand it, there is a constant power supply wire (for the HU clock and stuff) and then there is a larger main power supply (that is switched) for when the HU is actually on. If you have the constant power supply connected to the main power supply, your HU would never turn off. the problem is most likely something to do with your HU or around it, since that is what you changed. I'm assuming you wipers worked properly before. Just some ideas... |
