Bel radar detector owners - how is the digital voice?
Hey all, I'm considering investing in a Bel 985. How is the digital voice that reads the warnings? The Whistler real voice is a human voice so it sounds really good. Is the Bel one annoying? Do you guys use the digital voice or just the audio beeps?

I think its good, but is annoying when you are talking on the cell phone. sounds as human as a tiny unit like that can get.

I would have to say not bad at all. Nice for such a small unit.

I didn't really care for it myself, so I turned it off. The 985 has some really nice features though. I'm particularly fond of the ability to invert the display since I have mine mounted upside down on the little mini sun-visor above the mirror. That being said, I'm thinking of spending some big bucks to get the "arrows" (V1). Let me know if you'd be interested in my 985. It's just like new (box and all).

i'm also interested in getting my radar detector hard wired underneath that little sun visor...pics would help great.
i did have it velcroed upside down there but the head made it loose and it started falling all the time so i took it off. |

You can see pics of how I mounted the detector here:
Bel 985 I used some heavy-duty nylon 3M locking strips. Think of it as super-velcro that's all plastic, not material or felt-like. It's what I've used to mount my electronic toll-booth pass to the windshield. As you experienced, normal velcro doesn't hold on well enough. I'm not sure where to get this stuff. My mother-in-law picked it up for me from the traffic office that manages the toll-booths. It is made by 3M though. You'll want to put a spacer of some kind between the little visor and the headliner on the other side opposite the detector. The reason is that the weight of the detector causes the visor to sag down. Putting the spacer in evens it back up. I used some adhesive-backed felt pads I picked up at a dollar store, but I'm sure you can find something similar at any craft store. Scott |

This won't be technical...
I found the balance point of the detector and got that point as close to the hinge point of the visor as possible. That way there was as much detector weight keeping the visor from flipping down as there was trying to pull it down. The way its balanced there's no way I can flip the visor down without removing the detector. Hope that makes sense. Scott |

wires
very clean looking! one more question, how/where did you hard wire the power to? someone was telling me that it might be possible to wire it into the power for the auto dimming rear view mirrow...
like to know how you did yours thanks |

Thanks. You're correct about the wiring. Pull the maplight out by carefully removing the lens to expose two screws that hold the housing to the roof. The auto-dimming mirror harness (tucked in the headliner behind the maplight) receives power in the key ACC and ON positions. I believe there are 3 wires in the harness and you can tap two of the three with your two-wire detector lead. A quick probe of the wires will tell you which is hot. I routed the detector lead out the front of the headliner where it contacts the windshield. That's all there is to it.
