the '02 doesn't have a sunroof due to the increased rigidity of the frame. this is what helps to make the car, both WRX & RS, such good handling cars. adding an aftermaket sunroof will lessen that advantage.

To add to what Brian said... My understanding is that the extra rigidity is due in part to cross-members in the roof of the car. To put in a sunroof, you would have to cut into them, which would reduce structural integrity and increase body flex. You could probably do it (I think at least one person has already done this to a WRX) but don't say we didn't warn you

Question 2002 2.5RS

Hey, whats going on?

I am thinking of buying a 2002 2.5RS in plat silver metallic. I have seen some 2001 and earlier 2.5 RS pics on this site with sunroofs and modded lenses.

The 2002 models dont have sunroofs as an option-- i was wondering peoples opionions/experiences with aftermarket sunroofs (i can get one with a lifetime warranty included, but its $1100 bucks), and also if anyone knew where custom lenses and other cosmetic stuff for the 2002 RS can be purchased. Thanks in advance.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the replies.

It looks as if I am getting the 2002 RS this week. The dealer told me that spoilers are not available on the RS direct from the dealer, that is only for the WRX and that if I wanted one, they could order me one and when it comes in they can paint it and bolt it on.

I was told that a spoiler from the factory would use a different trunk piece that would have pre-drilled holes and more support beams that would hold the wing more stable and eliminate potential rust problems with the aftermarket addition (holes).

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences about this? Do factory direct spoilers use different trunks with more supportive beams etc.?

Does anyone know the specs of the upgraded amp/sub package for 400 bucks that mounts under the passanger seat (brand, RMS and max wattage, quality, etc)?

Thanks in advance,

Your dealer is stupid

First go to subaru.com and look at the RS options list. See there is a spoiler option. All the imprezas come shipped to the us without spoilers and then are added when they come into port. They don't come predrilled either. I know someone that was supposed to have the wing on his wrx. He is still waiting for it and there are no holes drilled in his trunk. Open the trunk of a impreza without the wing and one with the wing they should look exactly the same except for the mounting hardware.

Talking

Brian, here is what my dealer emailed me:

>>
If you want Rear spoiler you have to order the car first with the rear spoiler, other wise you can not get the spoiler from dealer.
This is a factory item only and is not available through the dealer.
If you order a car with factory rear spoiler it's take 6 to 8 weeks to get the car.
>>

I asked him to clarify and he insists that the spoiler is a factory installed option on the car, but that the dealer can do it on cars that dont come from the factory with the spoiler. I think he said all the wrx's at his place came from the factory with spoilers, and none of the RS's did.

So what you guys are trying to tell me is that there is no difference in terms of the trunk and the spoiler mounting between a dealer installed spoiler and a factory installed spoiler (if such a thing exists)?

The dealer said i have to wait several weeks before the spoiler comes in, at which point they will have to paint it and mount it all installed and painted for $400. Is there any risk that the paint wont match my car? I have seen more than enough cars with wings that arent quite the same color, or body kits that are slightly different than the body color, and dont want that to happen to me.

Also, he toldme that only the wrx has the special cross beams in the ceiling, adn that I could put in a sunroof aftermarket with lifetime warranty for 1100 bucks no problem. Is he right?

Thanks,

Bahboy20

ok
Go where ToJo said to go get it there it comes painted and install it yourself. So the dealer says you can't get a spoiler on it unless it was ordered with one, but they can install one for you? They have to paint it? $400? Subaruparts.com has the spoiler for $285.60 and it comes painted. Also the dealer says you need a different trunklid, but will still instal1 one on your car without it? Funny how they say one thing then contradict themselves later.

That is one dumb dealer. Try asking another dealer.

I wouldn't put a sunroof in there either unless you don't care about structural rigidity. You have to take out the main support beam in the roof. There is a picture of the that structure floating around somewhere on this board.

There should not be any structural differences between the WRX and the RS. I think your dealer is full of it. If you are talking to a salesperson, I'm not surprised. They rarely know anything beyond what they can read in the brochure. If it is a technician, then I urge you to run, don't walk, to a different dealership.

Hmmm..... Sounds kinda fishy to me. You know that dealers are notorious for making up answers when they don't know the real answer, right?

Anyway, Check out this website for spoilers:

Thats a big load of shiznit...

You can order the RS with the spoiler, and tell them if they wont do it, then they have to eat the installation costs or you wont buy a car from them. Period.

That should work.

Unhappy

Guys

What the dealer is telling me is that if I want a car with a spoiler, i have to factory order it on the car- and that will take 6-8 weeks to get such a car in cuz they have none such cars in stock.

At the same time they said they can sell me the car now, and when they get spoilers in the parts department (they have no spoilers now), they can install paint it and install it for 400 bucks.

My main question is if there is any difference between the trunk lid of a car with a factory installed spoiler, and the trunk lid of a car that has no spoiler on it.

Like I mentioned, my friend was told tehre was a difference in the trunk lid structure by buddy at his lexus dealer, who basically talked him out of adding one aftermarket since they said the trunk lid is weaker, and he would have to worry about wobbling of the spoiler, and rust since the lid wasnt designed from factory to hold a spoiler.

Is there a different trunk lid that you guys know of, or is that only for lexus? HOw can i find out?

Is an aftermarket spoiler safe to get? I cant want 6 weeks since I need to buy my car within one week.

Thanks

Don't know anything about the trunk lid or spoiler, but to address your speaker question, it sucks. Don't waste your $400 on it. Go get any aftermarket 10" sub and amp and you'll be much better off. Even a bass tube is better.

The trunk lids are the same. I've compared mine with a winged wrx. Go to subaruparts.com and order a spoiler for $285.60 painted. Or buy a better looking aftermarket one.

Also, see if you can get a 20mm WRX rear swaybar put on ($81.21 at subaruparts.com).

How much is shipping and then installation for that spoiler? Wont installation and shipping costs put it at 400 bucks or so anyways?

How much does a sway bar cost to install, or is it something i can do myself?

I dont know too much about mods-- my friend got me into in recently.

What would a sway bar do for me? Stop the car from 'swaying' on sharp/fast turns? Do you put one in the front too?

I'll tell you how easy it is to put the rear swaybar on tommorrow. It should be here tommorrow.

Install the spoiler yourself. All you have to do is drill 4 holes. It should be pretty easy to do once you get past the idea that you have to drill into your trunklid.

The shipping on the spoiler is $29.00

Just thought of something. The spoiler installation should take less than an hour and the average labor rate is $70/hr. So the installation price should be around that.

Since we're talking about spoilers and such for the '02 2.5rs, I have a question. I really like the new M5s spoiler... it's small and subtle, yet it looks so good IMO. Is there an M5 type spoiler for the RS? Any pics?
