Default UTEC Logs Showing Lean

I downloaded the Stage 2 with Uppipe map from WRXhackers. I know this map was set up to run 93 octane, but I can only get 91 octane over here in California. I ran it yesterday with no modifications to the map, and tried to datalog a few times. I kept seeing LEAN in the AFR settings quite a few times.

I know this may be a dumb question, but a person should never have a LEAN condition in any cell in AFR EVER, should they?

I have also been doing some research about using 91 octane on a 93 octane map. I have done most of my searching at all of the major Subaru forums, and I have found conflicting comments though.

In this link, which is the most current, cobraKLR suggests to reduce boost, not timing. But cobraKLR does live at 4500ft of elevation: http://www.wrxhackers.com/modules.p...light=91+octane

But in these two threads, the gerneral consensus is to pull 2 degrees of TIMING and add 0.2 of fuel to the maps.

What is correct for 91 octane? Is it deleting 2 of timing across the board? Or is it adding 0.2 to each cell in the fuel map? Or is it only isolated to boost?

What do you guys think?

I deleted 2 of timing across the board, changed the boost settings to closed loop. I put in 500's from 1000-2500rpm's and then 260 across the board from 60-100%, and went for a drive. I had the ABC turned out 3 turns and could only muster 15.1psi. I also added 0.2 of fuel to the entire map for safety. But man does it feel powerful throughout the rpm range.

Please give some comments.

By seeing this little bit of log, can anyone tell me if this is bad or not? YOu never want to go lean, EVER, RIGHT?

How does this log look? Good? Bad? Or right on point? Please comment.

lift off decel will always trigger a lean condition (the injectors are shut off basically)

Going by this log I would say you are OK. If you notice every frame (row of data) where you are "lean" TPS is zero or in the previous frame it was zero. This is normal. If you have a lean condition and don't have a low TPS value w/in a couple of frames then you should start adding fuel or more appropriately reduce boost. For example, if you have seven frames of data at 100% TPS and all of those read lean, Then you have big problems, and you prolly won't have to be logging to know about it. HTH's -Chuck

I think before going nuts on raising boost you should calibrate your TPS and Boost on the UTEC.

Boost should not be far off from reality, but it doesn't hurt to make sure when you are 1) on 91 2) inexperienced at tuning. Your TPS needs to be changed slightly in order to get 100% or more at max throttle (looks like ~97 on these logs).

I'd also recommend learning the UTEC at lower boost like 12-13psi, tune those MLPs well. Learn what you're doing where you have less chance of harming your engine. Progressively move up to higher boost.

That's the way I've done it, and I'm glad I have.

Also, keep in mind that TXS is in a place where 91 octane doesn't exist. Their boost recommendations are for those on 93, I think more than one person has found that slightly lower boost on 91 is better.

So I went out to calibrate my TPS, and I found a few things:

First Try is TPS Min of 0.7 and TPS Max of 4.0 = 98% max TPS

Second Try TPS Min 0.7 and TPS Max of 3.9 = 102% max TPS

It will not give me an even 100% of max TPS when I calibrate it. I tried all kinds of different combos between min and max TPS and it always landed on either 98 or 102, never 100 even.

So is it okay to leave it on 102% TPS?

I am also a little confused about calibrating my MAP. The instructions on doing this procedure are a little confusing. Care to elaborate?

MAP is confusing. Basically you just want to check it against your boost gauge so that they are in agreement for the most part.

Mostly just a sanity check.

You've probably already done this mentally, as long as the two are close and in agreement, you are set.

As for exactly how to do it, the instructions are a good explanation, just do everything exactly as outlined in them. Take everything literally. Basically you are getting two points on a line, and then translating them into values that the car will understand (MAP digital values)

Sometimes I find it easier to go by MAP digital anyway. I know my boost gauge is off by ~+1 psi at about 15psi because shiv showed me this when I had my Unichip tuned. For me, I care more about matching the level I had on my MBC than what boost I actually have. I know that boost level is going to be close to ideal. Rather than fiddle with getting just the right gauge pressure, I can go straight to digital MAP, since I logged what I had before I changed my MBC for the bleeder.
