Default Help me select tire size for stock '97 GT...please.

I know that the factory size is 205/55-16, but I was wondering if I could fit a wider tire. I am using stock GT wheels. I'd like to retain the stock sidewall height, in order to prevent false odometer/speedometer readings. Have any of you experimented with this?

you probably will get the best results for this question if you post on the tire/wheel forum. Luke at the tirerack moderates it and pretty much knows all, or at least it seems...

Try this for correct sizes.
Then go to Tire Rack to pick a tire.[

A 225/50-16 will maintain the stock rolling size, but you really won't see any benefit. The 6.5" wheel just isn't wide enough to make full use of the added width of the tire. The sidewalls will be pulled in, which means you'll end up with a contact patch that's no bigger than it would be with "correct" size 205s on there.

Either invest in some wider wheels ('98-01 2.5RS wheels were 16x7"), or just stick with the stock tire size.

Thanks, Pat. How about 215/55-16? Aer the 6.5" wheels sufficient for them? Will they fit w/out rubbing?
