Default Help me select tire size for stock '97 GT...please.

I know that the factory size is 205/55-16, but I was wondering if I could fit a wider tire. I am using stock GT wheels. I'd like to retain the stock sidewall height, in order to prevent false odometer/speedometer readings. Plus 0 would be 225/50-16. I don't want to get different wheels, so is this gonna be my only other choice? -and- Will the 225/50 fit on the stock 16" wheel?

Have any of you experimented with this?

Try this for sizes.
Then go to Tire Rack to pick a tire.

A 225/50-16 will maintain the stock rolling size, but you really won't see any benefit. The 6.5" wheel just isn't wide enough to make full use of the added width of the tire. The sidewalls will be pulled in, which means you'll end up with a contact patch that's no bigger than it would be with "correct" size 205s on there.

Either invest in some wider wheels ('98-01 2.5RS wheels were 16x7"), or just stick with the stock tire size.

Thanks, Pat. How about 215/55-16? Will the 6.5" wheels be sufficient for them? Is there enough space to prevent rubbing?

I would imagine it would fit (no rubbing), not sure about the wheel fitment. Check on Tire Rack's website - look at the specs page for the tire your interested in and it should tell you the range of wheels the manufacturer recommends. I would think that a 6.5" wheel is OK.

I think you will find that there are very few 215/55s available.

Thanks again. I'm thinking of getting a set of Pirelli P6 Four Season tires. They come in the 215/55 size. Anyone have any experience with these tires? I found a set for $200 with 10/32 tread depth (used).
