How difficult would it be to convert a 94 1.8 Impreza FWD to AWD? Also what parts am I looking at? Gas tank, tranny etc.

do a search for all the parts I think my friend looked at it and said the whole swap would be around 1000. But don't go on my word for that price. You could maybe find some parts on here.

It can be done. Not hard at all, but you need to have the tools, time, and ensure you have all the parts you'll need. I've done it, but don't recommend it unless you happen to have all the parts you need available for a really cheap price. You'll need tranny, driveshaft and associated brackets, gas tank, exhaust, rear crossmember with diff, axles, hubs, suspension arms (I think), struts, and strut tops. Pretty much every moving part from the flywheel back. Like this :

josh posted some really good pics of this on an earlier thread. and ditto, what he said. i believe the critical matching pieces you want are a tranny and diff that match each other. easiest if both from the same donor car. (i have a rear diff only for awd sus & disc brakes, no trans yet)
suggestion: if you can get access to a lift, it certainly is easier to work on. very little torqing leverage lying under the car.
i think my check list was:
rear suspension, all (struts, control arms lateral links)
knuckles disc or drum assembly
differential carrier (it looks like a giant T)
prop shaft,
transmission.
axle-back exhaust (needs to clear rear axle)
shift linkage?
gas tank?

i found all (+extras) but the tranny, tank & shifter for 400)

the "?" is because some cars have the awd fuel tank and the proper linkage already.
tony.
p.s. if you can pull the parts yourself, its better as you can take all the hardware & then some.
