Default Underbody Neon (Updated)

I have an idea,

My fiancé bought me a set of blue underbody neon lights for my 02 WRX, the Gold Series, Neo-blue color.

I have them installed already but they are a little too ricey to drive around with on in my opinion. She did buy them for me and they look very nice at night when the car is parked so I would like to use them.

Currently I have a switch mounted in one of the blank spots by the fog light and cruise control buttons. I would like the lights to come on when ever the horn honks as well, so when I lock or unlock the doors with the key fob the lights flash one or twice respectively.

I already tested the response of the lights, once the switch is flipped on or off the lights immediately react.

Anyone have any suggestions of how to get this set up?

Thanks in advance!

~Adam

the neons require about 2 sec to turn on and even longer to activate when temps are very cold... i dont think the flashing
lights are long enough duration for the neons to activate.
(same deal with FIAMM airhorns, not enough duration to
honk).

if i was to do it, I would trigger it to the dome light (via relay) so that it comes on when you unlock the car. that way you can enjoy the view while you approach the car and have your buddies
check out your car. then when you get inside, the lights go
off and you're back to your street-legal car.

undercarriage neons imo are pretty cool for display.

You'd be suprized, I know I was when I was playing with them. After not having them on for 2 days they still turned on and off as fast as I could flip the switch. I highly recomend the Gold Series from Street Glow, also the brightest out.

I'd have to agree hooking them upto the dome light is a great idea. The only think I'd want to do is swap out my 2-way switch for a 3-way so I have keep the lights off if I need to have to dome light on because a friend droped his PEZ dispencer in the back seat.

Now I just need to find some one with a Impreza electrical wiring manual to find where to splice in the relay.

i would hook up a second relay to the illumination fuse so that when you have the headlights on (only time your friend needs the domelight is at night to find his pez) the neon will not turn on.

Before I start this project can any one help point me to where I should attach the relay to the dome lights? Near the fuse box?

12v 10amp relay should be what I need if I read correctly. Is there anything else I should do safety or other wise other than disconnect the battery?

Default Update

Thanks kenchan for the idea, today I looked at the fuse box to see if there was a fuse for the dome light by it self. Unfortunately it is also the fuse for the clock. I don’t want the lights to turn on when ever the clock is on.... (Constantly)

One idea was to separate the clock and the dome light by using the empty fuse spot next to where they are now (number #13 in the manual)

Any other ideas?

Does anyone have a Subaru service manual that tells where all the electrical wires run so I can tap into the wire that powers the dome light?

ok,

if you want to use the keyless entry horn honk output you will need to diode isolate Pin 12 Red/Green wire off the keyless entry module. Unless you want your neon lights to turn on everytime you honk you oem horns. This should be a ground wire. You should be able to use this wire to trigger the relay for your neon lights.

or you can diode isolate 6amp the integrated module's parking light output to trigger your neon relay. this should be a positive wire off Pin A15 Violet wire off your integrated module. if a diode isn't used your neon lights will turn on everytime you turn your parking lights on etc...

if you happen to have an aftermarket alarm system you can use either the siren ouput to trigger your neons each time you arm/disarm or diode isolate 6amp the parking light output to trigger your neons as well.

netZ, I appreciate the information you posted and it may come to good use in the future, but I must inform you that your solution was for Plan A and if you read further you will see we are now on Plan B: attaching the relay to the dome light.

If you have any input I am sure I will but it to good use.

Thanks in advance.

spoon- i wired a blue LED to illuminate the iginition key area when the dome light is on. (ie, it has the same delay-off feature so i can fire up the motor at night without searching for the key slot).

i just took the ceiling off and tapped directly into the dome light harness. that's what id do for your trigger signal. its probably faster that way than to try figuring out the fuse box..cause as
you said, the clock and the dome are feeding through the same
line.

Do you have any pictures or even a quick description of your operation. I'd imagine taking the ceiling off isn't too hard once you find the right screws.

For your relay i assume you used a 12v 10amp automotive relay?

Lastly where did you run the wires to? I found there is room next to the internal fuse box behind the Fog Light switch for the relay to sit.

Thanks again.

spoon- actually, the ceiling is really easy to take off. you dont need to take it off completely, just enough so that you can wire
one small 22awg wire (as your trigger). if you can get a hold of the wiring diagram and locate where the delay-off circuit is, you may not have to take the ceiling off.

take the 2 A-pillars off the front (just pull)
take off the screws holding the sunvisors
take off the map light housing
take off dome light housing and you will see the wires
on the top. I forgot which wires it was but I just tapped one
wire and ran the 22awg through the ceiling. its a good idea to use foam wrap or mounting tape to mount the wires so that it doesn't rattle after you put the ceiling back up.
(btw, LED's dont use that much power so I did not use a relay)

run the wire through the front driver side A-pillar into the
fuse box area. i would use one 12v automotive relay for
the power on/off to the main power to the neon. I would
wire the main power through your grommet just above the
clutch pedal to your neon's.

i would also wire up a second relay triggering the fuse box
for "Illumination" fuse so that it shuts off when you turn your
headlights on. put that relay in series with your neon's main
power (which you just added the first relay to).

should take you about 3 hours but very rewarding at the end.
hehehe good luck.

Thanks a ton,

I am going to work on this tonight, I already have a switch mounted next to the cruise control on/off, I'm looking for a three way rocker switch to replace it with so I can have On, Off, and Dome light controlled.

I'll post pictures when I have them.

Sorry I didn't see this till now...
The dome light out put is located at the "intergerated module" just under & to the left of the steering colum... I think is is a "negitive" output (can't rember)

I have foot well blacklights that are on with the dome.
I only used the dome output for the relay coil & power the lighting from else where... I also added a diode to isolate the set up & put in a bypass switch so I can turn them on when ever...

Yeah, I'll get them up as soon as I can sync my phone with my computer, I took the pics with the camera on there because I was barrowing my digital camera to a friend.

Once I barrow a DV camera I will post action shots.

Why go through all this trouble when the dome light relay box is near the steering columb?

All the wires are right there. That were I tapped in for my neon. I mean if I were to install neon.
