Default Maybe you can help me out...

I need help with a decision - what vehicle to get.

First, a little background. I'm a Jeep guy. But first and foremost, I'm an automobile enthusiast. I'm a very technical driver. I had an '82 CJ-7 highly modified and highly used (off-road). I now have a '96 Grand Cherokee (modified and also taken off-road). I am not a redneck. I have always said that I'll own a Subaru before I die. I'm 25 and not married. I'm getting a new vehicle in 2Q '04.

'04 Grand Cherokee
-last model year of solid front axle. I will never buy a Jeep without one, so this is my last chance ('05s will be IFS).
-Closest thing to the ultimate vehicle. It would be built to perform well off-road, but still be an excellent daily driver.
-Can be used for daily commutes, outdoor excursions, off-roading, trips to Home Depot and the grocery store, etc.
-Large enough to tow and carry stuff
-Not very fun on the road (i.e. lifted with lockers and mud terrains means no "fun" to drive)

'04 STI
-Can be used for daily commutes (can it?), some outdoor excursions, grocery store and to carry some things from Home Depot (I was actually impressed with the trunk space)
-No more serious off-roading
-Fun as all hell to drive (I would think. I've never driven a Subaru or turbocharged vehicle)

Both are the same price (around $31,500). The Jeep has more uses, but the Subaru would be way more fun on the road, which is probably more than 80% of the time.

How would insurance compare?
Can the STi be used as a daily driver?
I can get well over 100,000 miles out of the Jeep - is the same for Subaru? Or is the motor too new to know?
Are maintenance costs extreme for the Subaru (i.e. $750 for brake pads)? They are normal for Jeep.
How do Subarus hold their value?

I don't mean for this to sound biased, as I am truly split 50/50 between the two. Naturally I'd like to just keep my current Jeep and get the Subaru and have the best of both worlds. But that's not good for me right now.

I greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

Well I've had my STi for almost a month....and I haven't gotten out of it yet! My drive is approx. 30 miles each way (stop and go backroads) and I've found it to be a fine daily driver....although all the traffic in front of me occassionally gets aggravating! And FWIW I still have my '02 Passat....just find the Subaru to be a lot more fun - although I'll hang on to the VW for road trips of more than 3hrs as it's just a lot more "cushy".

Except it is an SUV and by definition...sucks.

I mean the two aren't even in the same category...what do you need the vehicle for? Hauling things? It should be a very easy decision once you decided what it is you want.

Oh and by the way...that point above should be moved to the STi section....kthx.

-That depends on many factors. I would guess the STi would cost you a little more....like maybe 10%.

Can the STi be used as a daily driver?
-Absolutely. Ride quality is a little harsh on rough road surfaces, but you would probably get better gas mileage than in a Jeep.

If its anything like other Subarus - yes. (I think its safe to say that it is)
Or is the motor too new to know?
-Questionable, but my opinion is that it will be fine.

- Other than the brake pads, maintenance costs are not projected to be extreme.
How do Subarus hold their value?
- Not like a Mercedes but better than a Jeep.
