first ... "all the car magazines"

if they're all saying it, why don't you believe them?

second, it's well known that the short gears make the 0-60 and quarter mile times closer than the real world power difference reflects

but, third, most of the time, the sharper handling of the Evo has translated to faster lap times, even with the power advantage of the STi.

finally, why would every car magazine be biased toward the evo? Road and track selected the Evo as the winner of their comparison, even though both reviewers said they would choose the STi for themselves. The lower price helps a lot, too, with cars that are so evenly matched.

What is really fun is that people actually give credence to the numbers. The average joe can't drive the same car at the speeds most of the magazines post. If you are a really good driver, it is possible to beat an EVO driving the STI if in fact the EVO does have the faster title according to the mags.

Here's my take on this.

The numbers are so close, why should anyone care? You buy what you want. Personally, I find the interior of the EVO BORING. OMG, couldn't DSM have done SOMETHING better with the Lancer's interior for this model? Exterior, it's all a mtter of preference.

In my opinion, you drive one over the other because you like it, regardless of what the critics say. Why are people going to buy the new Neon SRT-4? Because, regardless of costs in some cases, there are people who like the Neon. God knows why, but they do.

Personally, I read the numbers in the mags to make my own decision. . . they never take everything into account, anyway. Magazines have to be as objective as possible. If you're a fan of DSM product, that happens to be a good thing for this comparison. If you're a Subby lover, then you just have hear about it. Anyone gives you flack for driving an STi and not buying the EVO, then I suggest you take it to the track and show them why you STILL made an excellent choice.

Much depends on the track as well as the driver.....SCC found the STI was faster on the Streets of Willow, VWvortex found the that the STI acheived higher average lap times and the fastest overall lap time and they used 7 different drivers. http://www.vwvortex.com/features/ind...compare03.html
The STI has also acheived the fastest 1/4 mile time in virtually every test.

As for 0-60, in Edmunds hands the extra shift alone prolly cost the STI half a second.

Finally, for what it's worth the Evo has not won every contest between the cars.

Motorweek stated that they preferred the STI.
SCC preferred the Evo, but stated flat out that they were choosing the slower car over the faster one. (STI 'won' on both the drag strip and the track). Road and Track found the Evo was faster on the road course, and the Evo won the subjective testing, but as you pointed out....the two editors stated that they preferred the STI.

The point is, it's inaccurate to say that the Evo has won every comparison, whether it's in terms of objective numbers or subjective preference. It hasn't. It has won most....but not all.

The REAL question is, why did they not do a 3 way comparison between the Evo, STi, and the Lambrossa? you KNOW the lambrossa would beat the wings off of those two, the cf stickers demand it!

SRT-4 faster?? Haven't heard that joke before, but it is a good one. Seriously, Neon's are cute. Everybody's grandmother should be driving one.

On the EVO comparison, yes I'll admit EVO won by a C-hair on the twisties, but doesn't win on acceleration (overall). EVO is fine if you want to drive a spartan go-kart every day - STi is essentially identical performance wise (depends on the driver) but is much more refined with more bells and whistles. THAT made it a no-brainer choice for me. I came from an Acura, so I wasn't biased towards either. Reading the reviews only, I didn't even consider the EVO an option. More HP and a more comfy ride? I'll take it! (One dancing bannana per 100HP!!!)

SRT-4's have factory support. Stage I is already out for under $500. Stage III will have almost 50% more adv hp. I can only dream for FUJI to do the same. The neon's will be a handful and more.

do you mean the crappy OEM one that car makers will drop in for you, or the very nice one I put in my STi for $600? I think the stereo is a great place for manufacturers to save money, since I enjoy installing my own in my vehicles. I'd be tearing the factory stereo out and selling it for 20% of it's MSRP "value" anyway.

With the 6-speed, DCCD, electroluminescent gauges, and front LSD, in the Subaru's corner, I think it still wins the battle of "bells and whistles". I'm interested in seeing whether the JDM swaybar makes a significant difference in handling, since that would be a pretty easy and cheap way to improve the STi.

I think both cars are great. I think the Evo is set up better for a track car and the STi is set up better for a daily driver. Not that either is an ideal daily driver, but that's how I view the two. I like the Subaru interior much, much better, and like the extra displacement over the higher boost.

Not busting on your car, by the way. Enjoy

Sorry, but I hate to say it - Everyone is biased. You at least came to the right place to hear sympathy. However, are you actually basing your decision (or maybe just your ego) on what the magazines say? Trust me, these articles will not damage the STi reputation, resale value, or performance. I bought the STi because it came with side impact air bags and the EVO didn't. But then I value my life over a couple of tenths of a second in some article. None of these magazines are claiming that the STi isn't as fun to drive nor that it is a bad car. Why then, is it bothering you so much?

Just sit back. Take a deep breath. And punch the accelerator. You won't be thinking about any stupid magazines, that's for sure.

Well, while that SRT-4 is smoking its tires trying to hook up all that power, I will be a 1/4 mile ahead.

It certainly hasn't in my home town. The local Subaru dealership still has a waiting list of 10+. The local Mitsu dealership still has the first two Evos they received on their lot. Its been four months and counting and there is no markup.

both cars make me horny.

I can't decide which one I want... Both are so incredibly sweet!!! SWEET!!! DUDE SWEET!!!! DUDE!!! SSWWWEEET!!!

Drive both of them extensively and make your choice. If I were going to buy one I would have to do that... both appeal to me. Both are awesome... I like the way the EVO looks better.. especially in black... mmmm black...

But the STI looks good to me too... I would probably take an STI though because I had a 2.5 RS then a WRX so to go to an STI would better the next level.. and I would be able to drive it at illegal speeds more comfortably. Though I wouldn't...
