Default Speaker Wattage

I am looking into putting aftermarket speakers in my 2002 WRX, running off the factory 6 disc CD player. Does anyone know the impedance that i can run and the min wattage?

4 ohm speakers should be fine, I think most aftermarket ones are 4 ohm. I don't recall what the OEM ones are, mine are downstairs in a box so I can't check easily. As for power the factory head unit does not put out very much, IIRC it is something like 8 watts/channel or thereabouts. The factory speakers are reasonably efficient, so it is possible that if you install aftermarket ones that are somewhat less efficient they may not sound as loud as the original ones. Try to find speakers with a high efficiency rating that will work well with lower power and also have a decent max/RMS power rating, so if you decide to replace the HU with a higher power unit and/or amp you won't need new speakers again.
Oh, and this belongs in the Car Stereo forum where it will probably be moved shortly.
