Default Why is this forum pruned so frequently?

I really like to read past articles or how they made out, but they're usually gone when I come back to read them.

They're not "pruned", they just naturally fall to the bottom of the page, and eventually off, as newer posts appear. If someone posts in the thread again it will go back up to the top, so if you don't see it there haven't been any recent posts in it.
If you want to find an older post, you can always do a search for it using keywords that were in the post. If it was a thread from the past several days or so, you may find it more easily by going to the bottom of the forum and changing the viewing option for posts from "last day" to "last xx days" so the list will then go farther back.

Not to mention that there are threads that are stored in archives when they get so old... and you can search through those, too!

Check your display settings at the bottom of the page. See where it says "show threads from..."? Yours may be set to 'last day' or 'last 2 days'
